2009 LODD Summary, 2nd Half

At the start of 2009 I began a deeper look into the statistics that make up our line of duty deaths. One reason was to see in greater detail what firefighters are dying of and how. A second reason was to begin an honest and respectful look at what is both technically and culturally considered line of duty by the American fire service. To help understand the second half of the 2009 data, readers should review…

My days have been spent lately packing up my home, taking care of my kids' needs, and looking for a job. I wish I had more time to look for a job. I went to a seminar at the Career Center Tuesday at NJ Employment and the instructor told us a whopping fact - actually two facts:

1-Most employers look through thousands of resumes; and

2-Many more employers are submitting positions to NJ Employment to save on a recruiting… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...January 28, 2010

I heard some sad news yesterday. There was a house fire in a neighboring town and a resident died and two firefighters were hurt. A few of us were talking about it later that day and someone said something I didn't know. Keep something in your wallet that if you are hurt you want to go to a particular hospital. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and firefighters.

Despite campaign, lack of smoke alarms continues to contribute to fatalities

Last year, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) launched the "Install. Inspect. Protect" campaign, which helps firefighters and prevention personnel emphasize to residents the importance of having a working smoke detector in their homes.
