It had not been long after the Sawyer furniture store had closed that evening that the fire began to slowly destroy the building. The call came in around six p.m. to the City of Prichard Alabama fire department. Shortly after Prichard fire department calls out for help putting out the fire that turned into a second alarm fire Wednesday evening. It did not take long after Prichard fire department received this call that the Mobile fire department and fire trucks along with a few fire chiefs were dispatched to Sawyer furniture store located on South Wilson Avenue.
When Mobile fire trucks got close to the scene they could see smoke and fire was starting to take over the large furniture store. The fire was so intense that the flames lit up the sky for miles.
Prichard and Mobile firefighters were at this fire for hours trying to keep the flames from spreading to stores joined to Sawyer furniture. Firefighters gave all their efforts to save the three stores but the fire took it’s toll and three buildings were destroyed.
