Around 6 A.D. in Rome the Corps of Vigiles was established. The Corps of Vigiles were a group of roman soldiers who were established to respond to fires in the city and try to extinguish them. The Corps of Vigiles were is existence until the fall of Rome around 476 A.D. The Corps of Vigiles is the first existence of a fire department type group that I could find while doing my research.
During the crusades a group of men called the Knights of Malta was formed. This group of knights…

Salisbury Post
Firefighters across the county are grieving the death of two Salisbury firemen.
"We lost two brothers today," said John Morrison, president of the Rowan Fire and Rescue Association.
Morrison, chief of the West Rowan Fire Department for 24 years, was among the dozens of volunteer firefighters from across the county helping battle the Salisbury Millwork fire.
"I'm sure the flags of every fire station are at half…

OK we're finally leaving after one of our guys just turned in his papers to get out and I mean this guy has been a fixture at the station for well, hell I think that they built the station AROUND him originally. Anyway we're outside and the local motorcycle Hecks Angels are revving up the Harley's and we can't even think it's so loud and we yell over across the street to tone it down and they issue a profanity laced tirade as they drive off across the street onto the sidewalk nearly crash into…

So I'm sitting here at Oh-Dark-Thirty on a Sunday morning, getting ready to head out and do an eight mile training run for my half marathon coming up in June (on Father's Day--sorry Dad) in Lake Placid. If you haven't read any of my previous blogs on the topic, I'm running 13.1 miles to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their "Team in Training" program, and I need to raise at minimum $1500.00
Thus far I've raised $730.00 on my fundraising page, plus a couple…

All I can say is.....thank god it wasn't me (this time).
Our usual drill night arrived, although I wasn't sure I was going to go...I'd been sick most of the day, but we got toned out about an hour before drill for an overturned bicyclist in a ravine...., and I figured if I could respond to that, I could drag my butt to drill.
The first half hour of drill was a repeat of what I like to call "The Chinese Fire Drill"---essentially, our chief sends everyone out on all three…

An older blog of mine but thought I would share it with those who can truly relate.
The picture you see above is one of many that I took last year during the worst wildfire season in recent Texas history. The orange glow you see isn't the sun going down, it's flames on the horizon. Over 1 million acres burned in a 5 day period. My husband and countless other firefighters risked their lives to protect…

Maybe someone out there can help me with what I am going through. I am a new MOM to a NOW full time Firefighter. My son is 18 and has been involved with the fire house since he was 13 but has been around the fire house since he was 6. He is a 3rd generation fireman. He just made firefighter 1 and will take it as far as he can and is going for his Paramedic as well. He called me at work today and was telling me about his first structure fire and how he was 3rd man in, and I had to stop him. I…

He is the guy next door - a man's man with the memory of a little boy. He has never gotten over the excitement of engines and sirens and danger.
He is a guy like you and me with wants and worries and unfulfilled dreams.
Yet he stands taller than most of us.
He is a fireman.
He puts it all on the line when the bell rings.
A fireman is at once the most fortunate and the least fortunate of men.
He is a man who saves lives because he has seen too much death.
He is…

My room is all black and filling with smoke,
I can hardly breathe, I am beginning to choke!
You can't give up, you have got to hang on,
We are on our way, Please, stay on the phone!
Our Engine Company is coming, as fast as they can,
We got our bunker gear on, and s.c.b.a.'s in our hand!
My breaths are becoming shallow and labored at the least,
Give us seven more minutes to arrive and slay the Beast.
My room is getting hotter, things are…

A volunteer fireman's life is one big surprise,
usually he laughs, sometimes he cries.
There's always stress, toil and strife,
Hoping he's good enough to save just
one life.
His wife understands, when he misses dinner,
If he runs out of church, don't think he's a sinner.
Answering a call, is tops on his list,
Regretting each one he's ever missed.
He tries and tries, but can't make us see,
the happiest men, still work for…

Firefighters are those crazy people who run into a burning building when all others are running out.
Firefighters are those people who wake up in the middle of the night to help an old lady, who fell out of bed.
Firefighters are those people who work on half eaten meals because someone needed their help.
Firefighters are those people who have a second family that seems just like a first family.
Firefighters are those people who never usually get…

A fire started on some grassland near a farm. The fire department was called to put out the fire. The fire was more than the fire department could handle. Someone suggested that a nearby volunteer fire department be called. Despite some doubt that the volunteer outfit would be of any assistance, the call was made.
They volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They rumbled straight towards the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames and stopped! The firemen jumped off the…
