I think that it is very important to make them all be an internal part of the dept. I know that the younger people in our dept. like to train, encourage them to do well, encourage them to move on to an engineer position, conduct training classes, to further their education in the fire service, with techonologies that are taking place today, that will have a severe impact to what Firefighting will be in the future,

Keep it fun, and keep it interesting...and don't make them pack hose ALL of the time (just some of the time :-) Make them feel like they are part of the team and part of your departments FUTURE, don't let them be treated like a probie piss on. They younger people in our dept like HANDS ON, they get bored if their nose is in the books all the time, do live burns (even if its something small) and show them some action to keep their interest...then they will brag at their school how much fun it was and you get even more young kids wanting to join!

Joe:
Two words: history lesson. Put a powerpoint presentation together using old and new photos. Set it to music; their music. I am doing one for our department because I think we have gotten stagnant. I am using Fuel, Three Days Grace, Tool and Rob Thomas for my music. When it is done, it will be twenty minutes long with over three hundred photos and a tribute to the ones who are deceased. If you are interested, I can possibly help.
