On a newfound appreciation for the little things in life

Due to my recent dislocate-my-knee-and-thus-have-cadaver-put-in-my-knee escapade, i have now gained a newfound appriciation for the things I used to take for granted, especially my friends and family who have stuck by me through this whole mess. This injury/surgery has for all intensive purposes catupulted me into being a bedridden 21 year old geriatric patient. I cannot even do the basic things needed to sustain life on my own. At the most, other than the bathroom breaks when it gets to the… Continue

The DVD features photographs taken at the fire and at the Line Of Duty Death funerals of both firefighters. For more information, please click the image below.…

DVD Saves Firefighter from Bullet

A South Carolina man is thankful for a DVD that ended up taking a bullet for him.

Colleton County Fire and Rescue Director Barry McRoy says he was leaving a Waffle House restaurant in Walterboro on Saturday morning when two men ran in fighting over a gun. Police say a bullet hit one of the struggling men, shattered a window and then hit McRoy.

The bullet hit a DVD McRoy was carrying in his pocket.…

EMS Friends vs. Civilian Friends

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Get upset if you're too busy to talk to them for a week.

EMS FRIENDS: Are glad to see you after years, and will happily carry on the same conversation you were having the last time you met.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Have never seen you cry.

EMS FRIENDS: Have cried with you.

CIVILIAN FRIENDS: Borrow your stuff for a few days then give it back.

EMS FRIENDS: Keep your stuff so long they forget it's… Continue

Life is fair?

Today my service brought in a six year old boy who did not make it. I then went to work at the same hospital where I walked by his body several times and I begun to wonder why I put myself through this kind of emotional charade the ups and downs, When at work I walked by his body but did not know he was gone. He was alone everytime I walked by the bay and the door was closed but I did not think much of it. I am sitting here after finding out and wondering why I do it. Why have I made the… Continue

CRAWFORD NOTCH, N.H. -- Two hikers missing in Crawford Notch since Sunday were found Tuesday morning -- exhausted, dehydrated but otherwise OK.

Alex Obert, 30, and Stephen McCay, 29, both of Arlington, Va., were found on the back side of Mount Eisenhower. A helicopter spotted the men walking and took them off the mountain at about 10:30 a.m.

"We're feeling pretty good," Obert said. "Glad to be out of the weather and into some dry clothes."

The men were in good… Continue

Make a wish.

First off let me say that im not putting this up for a Job well done, or a way to go, or a atta boy. This is a touching story that i happen to have had the pleasure of being involved in. If anyone would like to search this google (make a wish william mckay).

Two things can bring brawny, hardened firefighters to tears: Tragedy, and making the final wish of a terminally ill child come true. It explains why a dozen members of the Colonie Fire Department cried… Continue

Vacation?

Hey all! I just had my first REAL Vacation. Some of it was absolutely wonderful...and some of it would have made a good disaster flick! Everybody has a story to tell, and vacations always provide some good material for stories, so let's hear it - How was YOUR vacation?

The whole thing started out very promising...my best friend called me while I was on the side of a hill above San Bernardino in late October. "How would you like to go to Cabo San Lucas in February for your Christmas… Continue

Motorola Minitor Pager

I am in the market for a Motorola Minitor Pager. I lost my personal pager on a call and went back to look for it to find that it was ran over by the unit. To buy the newest pager which is the Minitor 5 is between 350-420 dollars. I do not want to buy a new one. But i am looking for one that is between the Minitor 3 and 5. It does not have to be new as long as it has the chager and battery w/ it. I do not need the programing things with it because the squad does that for us. So if you have one… Continue

Banquet Time Put to Good Use

It seems that every volunteer department in our area has an annual awards or appreciation banquet for its members. Good or bad I have been invited to be Master of Ceremonies at many of these get togethers. I can tell a few jokes, share a wonderful meal, and even get credit for taking my wife out for a night of dancing if everything works out to her liking.

Recently I have become friends with the local newspaper columnist that has also tagged along, by invitation, to many of these… Continue

The Littlest FireFighter

-Author Unkown-

The 26-year-old mother stared down at her son who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination.

Like any parent she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible. The leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and… Continue

Women in the Fire Service

Well, since it seems to be a big topic these days, not just on this board but at the halls as well, I thought I would give my uninterrupted two cents worth on my own page. It's come up in the halls because we have a new class going through soon and everyone is wondering who the next one will be. The interesting point is, the guys will talk with me about it and talk about their thoughts anc concerns with another "woman, or anyone for that matter" getting the job that may not be capable or… Continue

My Life

My life changed DRASTICLY on June 21, 1999.

That's when I was told I had M.S.

The doctor's believe that I had my first "attack" in Feb. '99, but can't prove it.

Because of an error in Feb'99, I lost my job of 4 years and 10 months (2 months shy of being vested).

I had no answer for the error (processed a 3.5 mil. fraud check) I had committed.

I picked up unemployment for a while (went crazy).

I believe that in those 2 months my house was the cleanest it had… Continue

Brotherhood

Today marks the third anniversary of my father's death. That may not mean much to you, but it does to me.

I can't pick up a tool without thinking about my dad. He was always helping me around my house, even when I wasn't here. Although my father never studied past the eighth grade, he was so smart in so many ways. I am constantly reminded of him when his dad-isms and life lessons resonate in my mind.

And I am reminded of him…
