My hero

I wanted to give my respect to a man that saved my life. Captain
Matthew Martin, from Death Valley. He taught me so much this year,
about myself, about firefighting and how to be stronger as an
individual. He literally saved my life more than once. People like this
guy are hard to find. He was the only person that would back me up,
teach and drive me to be a better stronger firefighter and friend.
Thank you Matt.

Faceplant

[[Okay, this post belongs back with the EMT school entry. This took place then, but I forgot to write about it...how, I don't know.]]

SMACK!

I feel the cold from the concrete as I roll myself over. "Oh...shit," I hear my partner say as he looks down at me. The warm liquid running down my face paired with the searing pain across my cheek tells me I've done some serious damage.

"Sam, your face is like...bleeding!"

Rewind.

All day long we've been in class learning… Continue

Heaven Hill Distillery

On Thanksgiving morning my dept got called out to the Heaven Hill Distillery for a whiskey warehouse on fire. When we arrived there was smoke showing from the roof. It had apparently been struck by lightning the night before and smoldered into the morning hours. We removed the burned area of the roof and soaked the area down, there was no major damage. My dept has had a previous fire here ten years ago that burned several warehouses and nine million gallons of whiskey. It was the largest… Continue

You O2 sat is what???

So, I will be the first to admit that I am spoiled. I am on the ladder truck, which is the promary Special Ops truck in the city. My station also has the only rescue truck based out of it. Translation- rescue runs most of the medical calls and I roll over and go back to sleep. Life is GOOD.

Last shift, I knew things were going to get bad when the rescue crew returned from a call with an old duffer who couldn't breath and refused to go to the hospital. Sure enough, rescue got banged…

A FireFighter's Life

It may take you two minutes to read this, but if you do not take the time to read this you are one of the people this post is talking about.

You stay up for 16 hours

He's been up for 48 strait

(that's a little bit exhaggerated, very unlikely under normal circumstances, but it can take hours at a fire scene depending on how bad, to finish the job and do the clean up after)

Twas the Night Before Christmas ...

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, except me and my spouse

The stockings were empty, no presents were wrapped

We were way behind schedule and our resources tapped…

A Firefighter Night Before Christmas

A Firefighter Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the station,

All was quiet except for our snoring Dalmatian.

Our boots had been placed by the bunksides with care,

In hopes that the shift change would finally be here.

The lights were turned down and the TV was off,

The…

i had my first fire at work 2 weeks ago today, a hot billett fell under a press and ignited a shovel in the basement and the oil under the floor grates, now i see why the said you never turn your back on a fire. i used 2 dry chem extinguishers. after i used the first one the fire flashed up on me, and again after the second one, until i was able to get a hose line to knock it down

the only ppe i had was an MSA AIRHAWK industrial air pack.

This is for Jamie I miss you girl R.I.P

Angels fall,

heros die.

Friends weep,

families cry.

Life falls away

leaving behind,

elusive memories

flooding your mind...

they blur and fade,

time washes away...

you long for peace

but the skies are still gray.

Why take her away?

Why leave us without?

Why give us this pain?

We lose faith to doubt...

But still...

angels fall,

heros die...

Sometimes,

these…

Rest In Peace, Chief- a LODD

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the death of our Fire Chief- Ronny Allen Bennett. Ron was the Chief of the Orcutt Fire Protection District in Orcutt CA. He passed away suddenly from natural causes on 11/14/2007 while preparing to go enroute to a call from his home. He was 39 years old. I ask for your prayers for the Bennett Family and the OFD while we mourn the sudden loss.

Goodbye

As long as i can remember i have wanted nothing more than to be a firefighter/paramedic. Last year that dream came true. I have witnessed compassion and evil at its worst level. I was born to be a firefighter but as of last week a diagnosis of hypertension and chronic high bloodpressure has left my board of directors no choice but to remove me from duty. I have given 110% to being a firefighter and more than anything i am proud to have worn the uniform. You stand out in a crowd you are the…
