OTSEGO -- A young couple was killed in an apartment fire early Thursday morning.

Kelley Washburn and Nate Elledge were found dead in their apartment at the Aspen Woods Complex on Farmer Street in Otsego.

The fire was discovered just before 2 a.m. on Thanksgiving day.

The apartment manager tried to get the couple out, but the door was locked and bolted from the inside.

There were no visible flames, but a smoldering blaze that generated toxic smoke. The couple may have never woken up or tried to escape, because the one thing that could have saved them was missing from the apartment.

"There was no visible smoke detector. There was a bracket on the wall, but there was no smoke detector," said Fire Chief Vince Pagano.
