The Continuing Chronicles of the FNG(irl): The Fit Test and Physical

First things first....I passed. (a barely stifled YIPPEEE!!)

Received my Class A certification card which will accompany me to my swearing-in.

There were some aspects to the physical and fit test that I found.....disconcerting:

1.) The eye test: after a rather frustrating several minutes with my face jammed up against what appeared to be a Fisher-Price Movie Viewer, and telling the examiner that I couldn't SEE "A-1" because it was…

Shine Your Light

The cry of the city like a siren's song

Wailing over the rooftops the whole night long

Saw a shooting star like a diamond in the sky

Must be someone's soul passing by

These are the streets

Where we used to run where your Papa's from

These are the days

Where you become what you become

These are the streets

Where the story's told

The truth unfolds

Darkness settles in

Shine your light down on me

Lift me up so i can see

Shine your… Continue

When God Made Paramedics......

When God made paramedics, He was into His sixth day of overtime.

An angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

God said, "Have you read the specs on this order?

A Paramedic has to be able to carry an injured person up a wet, grassy hill in the dark,

dodge stray bullets to reach a dying child unarmed,

enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch,

and not wrinkle his…

Raising The Bar

I took some time off this week to head to Atlanta with the family; my wife had work to do and I got to spend some time with my daughters. While there, I got a chance to go to the new World of Coke museum, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Children's Museum which were all within walking distance of where we were staying, downtown right off of Centennial Park.

With so much in the way of excellent venues being so close together, I had the opportunity to realize that this area in downtown…

Oscar is in my future

It was with great anticipation that I awaited the short list for the Oscar's today. As luck would have it, my daughter's bus had not arrived and I had to drive her and some other kids to middle school. Upon my return home, I discovered, I missed the reading of the Best Documentary list.

I went on to the Oscar site and discovered......there is an oscar in my future.

A long but true story to emphasize and old truth

The other night we made a stucture fire at what we thought was a single story wood frame. Fire was visible from one window on the "D" side of the structure. Moderate smoke was showing around a door that was next to the window. Our Engine layed a line in from the closest hydrant and my rig (Ladder-7), was assigned to ventilation. Since I only had 3 people on the rig, including me, I assigned my driver and firefighter to vent the roof, while I took the PPV fan to the point of entry, which in…

Had to work last night. The Monroeville Fire Department was dispatched to my own neighborhood for a elderly gentlemen who had wandered away from home. Temperatures were in the the single digits, as is most of the east coast right now.

Fire and EMS personnel from the 5 local departments, plus some mutual aid units (not sure who all was called in), searched the neighborhoods and woods for nearly 3 1/2 hours. I have to admit that, given the temps, I did not think an elderly…
