SUMTER COUNTY (WLTX) - Sumter firefighters were on the scene of a warehouse fire just outside of downtown Sumter Monday afternoon. As of 11 p.m. Monday, about 50 crew members were still on the scene.
The warehouse caught fire just after 2 p.m.
Captain Brian Horton told News19 that the location is off of South Lafayette Boulevard. He says, "It's pretty engulfed."
According to Sumter County EMS, one firefighter was transported to the hospital for injuries received while trying to put out the blaze. EMS says the firefighter was able to walk away from the fire to the ambulance. He has since been released. Captain Horton says he was treated as a precautionary measure for radiant burns.
People were inside the warehouse at the time of the fire, but all got out safely.
The 30,000 square foot building is being leased by a trucking company, Hodges Properties. It used to be used be part of the V.B. Williams Furniture plant.
The huge smoke and flames were fueled by paint, sealant, and chemicals.
No homes were threatened, but two other warehouses were protected.
Horton says it's one of the biggest fires in recent memory. It's believed heavy machinery being moved in recent days contributed to the fire, and that it's accidental.
The building is about 100 years old.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene, and provided water, coffee, food and heat for firefighters.
