Had to work last night. The Monroeville Fire Department was dispatched to my own neighborhood for a elderly gentlemen who had wandered away from home. Temperatures were in the the single digits, as is most of the east coast right now.

Fire and EMS personnel from the 5 local departments, plus some mutual aid units (not sure who all was called in), searched the neighborhoods and woods for nearly 3 1/2 hours. I have to admit that, given the temps, I did not think an elderly person had a very good chance of surviving.

Much to our delight, the gentlemen was found not far from home, about 3 hours later (shortly after sunrise).

I monitor the boards of companies and units across the nation. For a change I get to tell the local folks.......well done.

And yes, this time......

My congrats on a job well done to all the departments involved. Here in Onondaga County(New York) we have a program that provides elderly people, especially those who may have a tendency to wander, a GPS bracelet. When they are reported missing to our local 911, the sheriff's helicopter is dispatched and goes up to search for the GPS. They are able to pin down location within 1/2 mile and then search and rescue can take over. Recover is about 30-45 min. So far we have not had to use it except for practice. Hopefully we never have to use it.
