Is it me or do departments today rely more on electronic tools than before?
TIC is one.
GPS
Computers on our trucks.
Power point presentations.
Cell phone and Nextel.
Are we as the fire service getting to the point where we can not fight fire anymore without a Thermal Imaging Camera as the first thing off our trucks?
Do you feel that we depend on these things more now and if so - should we?
When I started (a thousand years ago) we…

I found some past issues of National Fire-Rescue magazine at the firehouse over the weekend and started reading them in my "library" at home. You know the one I'm talking about, the one adorned in porcelain and shower curtains.
I found a great article on generating public awareness that hits home in so many ways. We do a ton of PR at Evans Center, sometimes to the extent that I think we're becoming "over-exposed," but I still think we can do better.
This article touches on the…

The Dash Poem
by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning… to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth
And he spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved…

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." -Mark Twain
We all surround ourselves with certain types of people. Some are good influences on us, some are not. You can't choose your family, but you can make choices about friends and aquaintences.
There are those that support and encourage us. People who push us to our very limits and help us to realize our…

Hello all,
I am not sure if you saw my new topic i posted but yesterday was exactly what I was talking about in the posting. Smart assed, know it all rookies. I wanted to punch this guy in the mouth. Absolutely no respect unless you are on of his drinking buddies. I have no respect for this guy because he is like a remora on his training officers ass at all times, on and off the job. Very in your face and loud. It makes for a very uncomfortable and tense shift. Well for me at least he…

Its only May, and my collection of DUI humans grows by the week. I had considered waiting until the end of the summer and doing a wrap up of all of the fun conversations I've had with alcohol-fueled drivers but I can't wait until August or I will forget them all.
First, I'm glad they had a mock DUI at the high school. They should have made parental attendance a condition of graduation. So far this summer every single one of my drunk-wrecked has been between 45-55 years old.…

what a week flood watch and all, meetings all day Wednesday, training the crew is liking the 5" line, a bunch of typical calls, activated alarm not much excitement with those. Green up is still going adding to the summer fuel we will have to deal with. Well so much for this week maybe things will pickup the last week of May. everybody play it safe this holiday weekend

Under fire...we were there within minutes of the dispatched. Lightning had hit a house and started a fire in the attic. We got there in full turnout and grabbed the preconnect for a fast attack. The visibility in the house was crystal clear and very quiet. You can feel your heart beat. Its pounding from the adrenalin. We head up the flight of stairs and can hear it over us. The fire. We pull the ceiling with the pike poles and can see a sliver of an amber glow. It grows brighter the harder we…

I would like to take the time to thank all of those who choose to serve their families, communities, city, state, and country. There is no greater calling than being a fisher of man. Be careful this weekend and enjoy the day.

Tornado's ripped threw Iowa yesterday. Hardest hit was Parkersburg, Iowa. I have been volunteering my time to go and help clean up. Later Sunday Night, we almost got hit. A confirmed tornado touched down 15 miles from me, and another 10 miles from my place. Talk about too close for comfort..Hazelton Iowa also got hit along with new Hartford Iowa. I have posted some pictures, and as more are available will post some more. Be thankful these didn't hit you, it can happen to anyone. These… Continue

It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. ~unknown~
Have a safe and happy Memorial…

As I mentioned in a previous blog, you'll notice that all of our press releases end with a common theme: Recruitment.
We pounce at every opportunity to get our recruitment message out to our target audience.
As an effective means of both recruitment and retention, we write a press release to announce new additions to our team every time someone joins our fire company.
Written properly, these types of advertorials can breed real success.
Hopefully, it…

This has been a very memoriable weekend. I worked Saturday and did not do anything until early evening. We then has several motor vehicle accidents which included utilizing many services which included the air ambulance. In the course of 5 days, there were approximately 10 flights from our area ONLY.
I want to say that the services that I work with are nothing less than the best. I have made countless friends over the course of 18 years and hope that I have developed a respect with…
