I found some past issues of National Fire-Rescue magazine at the firehouse over the weekend and started reading them in my "library" at home. You know the one I'm talking about, the one adorned in porcelain and shower curtains.

I found a great article on generating public awareness that hits home in so many ways. We do a ton of PR at Evans Center, sometimes to the extent that I think we're becoming "over-exposed," but I still think we can do better.

This article touches on the fact that you need to keep doing different things until you find something that sticks, something that works for you in building public awareness as to the needs of your fire department.

Here's the link to the article: http://www.nfrmag.com/home.php?id=119&cid=635&article_id=10198 and a follow-up to that article at: http://www.nfrmag.com/home.php?id=119&cid=638&article_id=10201.

Read the article, let me know what you think, and let me know what your FD does to help itself in building community awareness and partnerships.

Don't give up. Keep plugging away.

Think of a way that you can take them information that makes them feel good about themselves and/or makes them look good.

Offer them opportunities to partner with you to make the community safer.

Presentation is everything.

Let me know how I can help.
