Hurricane Hazel, October 1954

On the afternoon of October 5, 1954, hurricane hunter planes found the eye of Hurricane Hazel about 50 miles east of the island of Grenada. The eye was poorly defined, but its highest winds were already near 100 mph. It was the beginning of a storm that was to spread death and destruction from the Caribbean up through the Carolinas, the middle of the Atlantic states and into Canada.

By 11:00 a.m. on October 14, Hazel reached North Carolina, its winds sustained at 150 mph. It was… Continue

Life as a dispatcher

yes life as a emergency services dispathcer can be rough taking calls, sending fire departments out to motorcycle mva's and finding out that the rider or riders are DOA. yes it is very rough. but just like being a fire fighter you learn quickly that you cant save every one and you have to put the bad ones behind you. this is not an easy thing to do knowing that you took the call for that motorcyclist down or person hit by the car, not knowing what happened to that person or persons can be… Continue

Update on training fire

Yesterday we had our training fire at the abandon house and all went well with the exercise, we had a good turn out of personnel as well. One glitch happened during the day and that was our reserve engine that was being used as the attack engine blew out the relief valve and caused an unexpected down time.

Being a chief

OK so officially I have been chief of my fire department for just over a month, and people think it is so easy being chief. let me tell you first hand it is not all that easy, you have to be every one's friend, you have to be a father to the young guys, a brother to you peers and a listener to the ones who where ther before you. In addition to that you also have to be the leader that the department need you to be, making quick and life changing decisions. Making everyone happy is impossible, it… Continue

McCain Accused of being a racist...

OK, All I got to say is that within the last couple of days McCain has gone out of his way, at his own rally, instead of talking about the issues, he has tried to reduce the tension by his supporters toward his opponent. If anything McCain respects Senator Obama, but that doesn't mean he isn't going to speak the truth. Yes both sides have been conducting "Attack" ads-but McCain is getting the brunt of the backlash especially being called a racist simply because his "attack"ads are attacking his… Continue

Men are from Mars. Women are from the continental US.

I often find myself perusing this website at the wee hours of the morning with every intention of learning something new every night (when I'm working - that is). I have to say, I do pick up quite a bit of knowledge from some very informational posts and I do appreciate it! I feel like sometime here I may need to give back a little bit. Unfortunately, I'm not a firefighter - I'm edging my way into being an EMT and I am a dispatcher. I can't imagine that my input will be useful to thousands,… Continue

Too much manpower?????

So I just got done watching a video that Webchief was talking about titled "too many guys on the roof." If you havnt watched it yet, I hope you do because it lead me to the point where I am now that got me wanting to write this. So here goes,

Being a volunteer, especially one having only two years in the fireservice, I know all about that feeling of wanting that pager to go off the second I get home from work, rollin out of the station, and tryin to be superman at the scene. I think… Continue

the test

Well today the 9th of October I found out what i made on the test in which i thought had nothing to do with fire fighting, I made a 92 which i don't know if it was good enough or not, the lady said they would be calling sometime in November to set up further dates and that I need to update them on contact info if it changes, So maybe it will work out for the best I hope so. I still have one more test to take for a different department. so if i do good on the other one i guess it will just… Continue

Coldspring Fire - Rescue- EMS

Hey every one a little about me and my department. I am 25 years old and have been in my company for 11 years next year. I am a born and raised country boy. I love to have fun, ride four wheelers, get dirty, work hard and help my freinds and neighbors and visitors to our area as much as I possibly can. My fire company is a small rural company with six trucks, a 12 ft boat, an off-road rescue ATV and transport trailer. We answer around 200 calls a year. We have 21 active firefighters including… Continue

EMS with a GED. What are your opinions? -17 Years Of Age.

I have my GED, and I feel like I shouldn't even try to pursue EMS just because of that reason. I feel like I would make it look bad, and wouldn't be respected or taken seriously. I always feel awkward when people ask me what year I graduated, or what school I graduated from, and I have to respond with "I got my GED".

It was the decision I made, and I feel like there is nothing wrong with having a GED, but what matters more is what you do after you graduate. I guess I could say I feel… Continue

Another Thursday

Thursday night (obviously), the kids were here while Mom went to weight watchers (the last payment of which, BTW, came out of my checking, she hadn't changed that when she moved out. Bounced a payment I had made too. But I digress...) They are home now and the place is quiet. The house was on the market about 2 weeks or so and someone made an offer on it. So we meet at the real estate office to go over the paperwork. Our agent is on vacation in Hawaii (must be nice), but her brother, who is… Continue

A medevac story from the Internet

Maryland to Revise Medevac Guidelines

Doctor's OK to be required before some chopper flights

The Baltimore Sun

In a move that could reduce the number of medevac flights in Maryland, state emergency medical officials announced yesterday that ambulance teams will be required to consult with doctors before deciding whether flying some accident victims to a trauma center is better than driving them to a local hospital.

The change, in response to a deadly helicopter… Continue

Town Board and the Frustration.

Now I know I shouldn't be frustrated but I AM. I had a meeting last night with a neighboring town that we contract with to provide fire and EMS protection too. The issue was that this town is split into two districts, and coverage is provided by two different companies. The town supervisor of the town that we contract with is obliviouse to how much it takes to run a fire department these days. Now some might say that she is undereducated about the topic and needs info from us. Well I gave them… Continue

Daily Dumbass October 9, 2008

Today's daily dumbass is certainly a new low. Taken from KCMQ.com.

You can get arrested for driving just about anything drunk, and today’s dumbass has hit a new low. A guy named Leslie Marr in Whitehall, New York was fined nearly $400 for driving a motorized cooler while he was drunk. He was arrested after police saw his riding his “Cruzin Cooler” while swerving on a sidewalk. Cops even confiscated Leslie’s cooler until his fines are paid.

National Memorial Weekend

I’m going to warn you ahead of time. This is a long post. It’s an emotional post. If you don’t have a little while, just come back later. When you’re ready, grab something to drink, and consider having some tissues close by. I’m going to share the most amazing experience I’ve ever had as a fireman.

I’ve just returned from the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This is the second time I’ve attended, but the first time I’ve been a part of the… Continue
