The Maltese Cross
The badge of a fireman is the the Maltese Cross. The Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection . . . a badge of honor; it's story and tradition is hundreds of years old.
When a courageous band of Crusaders, known as the Knights of St. John, fought the Saracens for possession of the Holy Land, they encountered a new weapon unknown to European warriors. It was a simple, but horrible device of war, it wrought excruciating pain and agonizing death upon…

What a year 2009 has been. In January I decided to get off my rear end and get back in shape, and 40 pounds and a couple thousand miles on the bike later, I am almost where I want to be.
(
resting HR 55, BP 110/70, and cholesterol sits at 155)
Things changed on a more drastic level in March when my beautiful wife informed me we were having a baby in October! Now I know, I already have 4, how drastic can another one be?…

FEMA's trailers have become a symbol of FEMA's potential disorganization. Many remember the photos of FEMA trailers standing unused in parking lots, while citizens are in need of homes. Last year's fermalgyheide incident, involving FEMA trailers, did not help reduce this stigma. FEMA's trailer program has once again been thrust into the spotlight.
After last year's flooding, many Iowans were left either with homes in disrepair, or without home altogether. Many of these citizens were…

On April 9, AOL Autos published an article titled, “‘We Run Red Lights for a Living’: Inside A Fire Engine Driver’s Mind.” The article in and of itself is pretty informative, with quotes from a Boston Fire Department engineer such as: “There’s a fire there, there’s still gonna be…

WESTOVER - With a community and hundreds of fellow emergency responders paying their respects, the Westover Area Fire Company sounded the alarm one last time Wednesday for fallen fireman Roy E. Westover Jr.
The 41-year-old Westover man, who died of a heart attack early Saturday battling an arson fire, was laid to rest after a full honors ceremony where friends remembered him for a life dedicated to family, firefighting and friends.
"Roy was a marvelous man a family,…

Local carnivals move and set up several times, often weekly, as they move from town to town. The North Bailey Fire Department was in view from my bedroom window in the house I grew up in. Each year, the department held a firefighter carnival, complete with a ring toss, chicken barbecue, refreshment tent and…

The (secret) dark side: The reality of a first responder’s job
can be traumatic
Story & Photo by Harold Schapelhouman
Recently, I was asked to do a presentation for a Catholic men’s group on the various disasters I’ve responded to over the years. More than 100 men showed up to the event, where I delivered about a 45-minute discussion that included the Loma Prieta earthquake, the Oklahoma City bombing, the attack on the World Trade Center, the…

The pandemic sweeping across the country and the world brought at least one interesting question into consideration that had previously not been considered:
If your agency is tasked with providing front-line medical care to those affected with the H1N1 virus, does your employer have the right to force you to be vaccinated or face being fired?
Many of us have already decided if we want to get the vaccinations. But the ability for us to make our own…

I have always pushed for continuing education. It's the guy that thinks he knows everything that one needs to stay far away from. Nothing is ever static, and if you aren't on top of the changes you may then be the biggest danger on the scene. Tradition is usefull only as a starting framework, filled in by new ideas and updated knowledge and techniques. My biggest problem is the interruptions while I am reading. When the tones go out, I focus on that task. then, when I can get back to the…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...October 26, 2009
I work in Chatham, NJ, only two miles from St. Pat's Church where Father Ed Hines was murdered by the janitor of the Church. I work across the street from the Chatham FD, where Father Hines was a chaplain. The flag is half staff and the flag is outside, showing a death in the fire department.

By the time this article is published, the wildfire season will have passed yet again. Although people continue to argue about whether and how much climate change is caused by humans, the intensity and duration of the fire season seems to be getting worse.

As everyone knows the law if you are in a fire dept vehicle responding emergency traffic to a call if you have your lights on you much have your siren on.
It is there emergency and plus its our safety.
One of my fellow members stopped me last night responding to a apt fire saying it is a curtious thing that we do
I respect his arguement although I am worried about my safety and my ass getting there and not worried about waking a whole neighborhood up
I was taught…
