5 years later, Chief Page’s influence lives on
Over the course of a lifetime, each us will experience events or meet certain individuals that leave an indelible mark in our memory—a lasting impression that changes our lives. In some cases, the memories of these events and/or people bring about great sadness; for others, they become influential experiences that set the course of their careers.
For me, that event occurred on May 28, 1977. It was a warm summer evening…

You work codes and unfold sheets. You put your arm around onlookers and family members and guide them away. You listen to them in the hallways of the ER. Wiping their eyes roughly with the heel of a grimy hand, going over and over the last thing they said, yesterday morning when they fussed at him for getting into the sugar.
Whether we want to admit it or not every death takes its little dig out of us. Every shattered helmet and flat green line and 'unknown downtime' puts a little…

We do a lot of traffic control in our area. We have a major single lane US highway, lots of blind curves and over 6 % grade. One of the first things we do on a scene is set up a safety zone. Sometimes that means stopping traffic but often all we have to do is slow traffic ahead of the accident so the guys around the curve at the scene can direct them around. We carry the requisite vests/wands/signage but often folks still just fly past us. Stopping traffic is easier because we can block the…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...August 22, 2009
Tomorrow is an important day. It's a bone marrow drive in Staten Island for a retired Staten Island firefighter named Roy Chelsen. Roy was a hero during 9/11, and according to some accounts, was responsible for getting his crew out of the WTC that day.
If you are in the NY, NJ, Connecticut area, please consider attending the bone marrow drive for Roy, or joining the bone marrow donor registry.
Here's the Facebook…

Note: This is my most recent blogpost from my everyday
blog. I figure turnabout is fair play; if I can get humor out of patients' situations its only fair that I tell on myself.

I drive for a living, and one of the annual annoyances of driving for a living for a trucking company is the ‘random’ drug test. ‘Random’ earns ‘quotes’ because I usually am ‘told’ when its going to…

Dear Friends,
We urge you to read this entire note, repost it, send to your email contacts, etc. and remember what Einstein said. "The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing."
One of the charities Salute to Firefighters raises money for (the NYC Firefighter Brotherhood Foundation) is the fund that John McNamara started. The Foundation would like us to remind everybody that their work is still not…

Well, yesterday as I was driving home from running a few errands a tone out for a 14 y/o girl who had flipped her ATV came over my pager. I arrived on scene to help inspect her posterior thorax and help backboard. We loaded her and went the hospital. It was the usual, "do you remember what happened that made you lose control of your 4 wheeler?" Pt, "I was on a 4 wheeler?" Medic, "yes, hun, you flipped it and now we're taking you to the hospital." Pt. "I want my mommy!" Medic, "your mom is in…

The headquarters of ice-cream maker BICO went up in flames tonight, causing at least one million dollars in damage.
The north-western section of the complex was extensively damaged by the inferno that started around 7:50 p.m. and lasted more than two hours.
Chief executive officer Edwin Thirlwell, who rushed from home to the complex, said as far as he knew it was the first fire to hit the company since its opening on Bay Street in…

On Friday, members of the Barbados Fire Service learned of the death of Chrisita Idalia Yarde a civilian employee of the department.
Ms. Yarde was employed as a maid and worked with the department for many years serving at all of the fire stations before being appointed to staff (full time) in 2004. She was last assigned to the Worthing Fire Station in Christ Church.
The sincerity with which Idalia approached everyone will certainly be…

With discussions about "Health Care Reform" taking place all over the web, with all the outcries at "hometown meetings", armed people walking around at functions attended by the President, is it any wonder that "We the people" are concerned?
I
was am a believer in the Bill of Rights, I do not necessarily align myself with "civil liberties" groups and firms. But an email was forwarded to me with an interpretation of the health care plan supported by the President. As I read…
