Dispatch Job

We'll people I got the phone call this afternoon. I didn't get the job. I am really bummed out and disappointed. I was really looking forward to this job. At least I still can be with my firefighter department family.

Another Slow Week

Well it is Friday and has been another slow week here at the station. I Have sat and listened to everyone run but me. But thats every week here at Mayesville 5. But on the bright side I started part time with EMS last week so their will be a little excitement in my week come the weekend. I guess you could say I have the good and the bad of it all. So far this morning their has been 3 MVA.s on the outher side of the county and one house/grass fire on my side but out of my response area. So I…

Flogging a dead horse.....SEATBELTS

Every single time we run a road safety program, and we stress using seatbelts, inevitably I get at least a handful of responders saying...."But I caaaaan't wear my seatbelt....it a.) takes too long to get on b.) doesn't fit around my turnout gear "

Let's review: A.) It takes too long to put on? It doesn't take any time at all to be dead though, does it? Especially after you've been ejected from a rolling pumper tanker and it's now laying on top of you. Is your rig only slowing…

When Do You Stop?

Semi vs car

I was acting EMS chief and first on scene at a reported multivehicle with entrapment. I did the typical "are you OK" to the truck driver and continued on to the car. I got a pulse called in and command was established by another Asst Chief. We set up and worked like hell for 10 minutes. ALS called it. It was like every bit of adrenaline immediately left me and I was beat. After beating the reaper twce that day it…

When at First You Fail, Try Try Again!

Last night I filled out YET ANOTHER application and I turned it in this morning. This department is VASTLY different than the last one. The last one was fancy and pretty and in an upscale community. This one, not so much. A bit ghetto, slightly shabby, not fancy at all. The department shares its lot with the clerks office, road department, and police department. It took me a while to figure out how to even get in the building! All the buildings are painted white and locked up tightly, versus… Continue

Mound City Church Fire

Got the call about 9 pm the 28th, Old military rd, at the church flames and smoke showing. When I got there I was ahead of the Engine. The roof and front of the church were in flames and the fire was licking the power lines in fron tof the building. The church building had been abandoned for sometime so more than likely it was a set job. When the Engine arrived on scene the guys went to work. When we left there an hour and a half later the church building and the trailer next to it were gone. I… Continue

Time Of Being A Cadet

For some of us, it seems like yesterday that we were just starting out on the fire department. For some it might have been just yesterday that we've started out on the fire department. Some of us started out as cadets or explorers, while others came on as probee firefighters. Everything was new, unfamiliar, and, at times, rather frightening.

I came on my department as a Cadet, and we were…

Chief 601: Complete (RIP) He walked through fire, he felt it’s heat Yet never once did he waver. A Firefighter; he’s done his best, He showed the hot blaze no favor. When others called he answered - yes; Quickly, each time he responded During the day or if at night Never left callers confounded. So brave and strong, mighty was he One to respect and admire. He fought the fight, remaining tough 601: The Chief of fire. Amazing though was his soft heart, His kindness and gentle smile He touched us… Continue
