Every single time we run a road safety program, and we stress using seatbelts, inevitably I get at least a handful of responders saying...."But I caaaaan't wear my seatbelt....it a.) takes too long to get on b.) doesn't fit around my turnout gear "

Let's review: A.) It takes too long to put on? It doesn't take any time at all to be dead though, does it? Especially after you've been ejected from a rolling pumper tanker and it's now laying on top of you. Is your rig only slowing to a rolling non-stop at the scene? Are you going to leap out of your moving vehicle directly into a burning structure? No? Then you have time to get your seatbelt on.

B.) If it doesn't fit around your turnout gear, then get belt extenders or leave your coat off until you get on scene. Ditto the air pack. What are you going to say to your family and loved ones when they have to come identify your body because you were ejected and killed responding to an incident and you were in too much of a hurry or couldn't be bothered to buckle up? You're not going to say much of anything, because you're dead, and you don't get second chances with dead.
