AFFF on Ethanol Fire

Has anyone used a CAFS on an Ethanol fire using AFFF? How did it work for you and how much BTU or fire did you have? We have a Ethanol plant here in Garnett and have had two incidents. One at the plant with a vessel blow out. And one tanker rollover with7,000 gallons on board mixed with30% gasoline.

first EVOC course in the Philippines

Last June 14, 2009. Retired US Airforce Captain Jason McDonald a firefighter/paramedic - our technical adviser. Conducted the first Emergency Vehicle Operators Course which is held at the 2nd company station at Barangay (Village) Pineda, Pasig City. Attended by 3 drivers and two company officers, in which this is our first batch. Let's Be Different This Year, Huh?

Since I joined the fire service in 1980, well over 3000 firefighters have died in the line of duty. Some of our better years, if you can call them that, were in 1992,, 1993, 1996, and 1998 when we were below 100 lodds. Approximate numbers tell us that 50% are due to cardiovascular stresses, heart attacks and strokes, 25% are attributed to vehicle collisions, and the rest fall into categories of trauma due to collapses, gun shots and falls. I have not been active on FFN for a while, and for good reason. A discipline problem has made 2009 pretty stressful at times. Due to ongoing legal issues there’s not much more I can say about it now, however the story will be told in a future blog. I will say that as 1st Assistant Chief I have tried to shoulder some of the load borne by the Chief, and help resolve the problem.

I can't tell you how much better I feel knowing I can freely blog here.

Today was quiet, went to Mass, saw some of our firefighters as ushers. What a great thing for the community to see! And one of my favorite guys got a bench dedicated to him at our local park. Wish I could have seen it, but was working.

Sophia, WV Fire Chief Passes - FYI

Terminally Ill WV Fire Chief Passes

SOPHIA, WV -- Colleagues say firefighting was the love of Louis Dale "Sonny" Farthing's life.

Now, they plan to give him a firefighter's -- and a hero's -- farewell.

Farthing, the 61-year-old chief of the Sophia City Volunteer Fire Department, died at a hospice house early Thursday morning (6-11-09), said his successor, Jeff Pittman. Farthing endured multiple cancers that included leukemia.

first time pumping

today was my first time ever pumping our truck.
The engineer walked away to do something and the tanker that we were flowing off of was empty so it weas up to me to keep the water supply going, so i took control and pumped.
As a junior firefighter i know that i am limited to what i can do, but this was one of those times that i had no limits. It might seem pointless toi others put it feels like a big accomplishment to me.
