What is it to be a Firefighter?

We are always asked what it is that drives us to do what we do. It’s not just about all the training, checking and re-checking our equipment, or riding through the streets with sirens screaming. It is about making a little kid’s day because you let them look at the rig. It’s about the unspoken thank you, you get when you save someone. It is about providing a service to your community that gives you a sense of accomplishment that you have done something great. To be a firefighter you accept the burden of loss that comes with the job. Being a firefighter you also get to experience the greatest high of saving a life. Firefighters are an eternal beacon of hope and humanity. Few others can claim to have such a high prestige. Firefighters are some of the few brave souls that dedicate their lives to the betterment of their community and are willing to lay down their life for a complete stranger without a second thought. What is it to be a firefighter? A firefighter is everyone’s silent hero and it is that which drives us.

its funny hows our views differ. I love being a firefighte/paramedic. but when you work in a neighborhood that 3/4 of the people think you are garbage and They call you and tell you how to do your job, and if you do it to the best of your ability, everyone is still pissed off. people call you because they are Irresponsible and dont even take care of themselves but they expect you to take care of them. The community around me doesnt really appreceate us. From that I draw my real sense of pride.I dont really share your vision above. What makes me proud to be a firefighter/medic is the response and the respect I get from my fellow members that I work along side. The members that will bust their ass because they have company pride and are driven by hard work and dedication to each other as a team. Our company has the respect of surrounding companies because of how we work. I draw my pride from the fact that THEY respect me as a part of our house and a part of the team. and I am proud to serve along side of them.

I found that to be very incredible. It hits right to the point and I have to agree with it, especially the part of the silent thank yous and the face of delight of little kids. My 3 teenage dtrs think its great that Im a firefighter and my husband tells me of how proud he is to tell his friends that I am a volunteer firefighter.
