MUST-SEE VIDEO: Tower Imploded to Make Room for New Fire Training Facility

Members of the Erie County Department of Emergency Services (ESU) watched from a safe distance as the county's 40-year old fire training tower was blasted with dynamite.

Seven pounds of explosives were used to blast out two pillars, collapsing the tower on to the area previously occupied by the smokehouse training prop, which was demolished earlier this week.

Back to the Basics: Build a training program that refocuses your troops

Back to the Basics

How to build a training program that refocuses your troops on their primary mission

By William Sturgeon

Several years ago, I was playing golf with a friend of mine who happened to be a triple-A baseball pitcher. I wasn’t playing very well that day, so I asked him, “What do you do when you start pitching poorly?” He told me he always goes back to his fundamentals and recommits himself to mastering the basics again.

This made me… Continue

when is it enough

Now I know this is for firefighting and stuff like that but I got a serious question....
When is it enough? when is it time to move on from a girl? When is it time to throw in the towel form all the pain and misery? I know everyone on here is experienced than I am. I am young. So please, if anyone knows and can help me, please post something or send me a message.
Thank you.

How You Can Help Build the Library on the USS New York

Recently, I was contacted by FireRescue contributor Freddie LaFemina of FDNY, about an important project the FDNY is involved in: helping create a library on the newly commissioned USS New York.

That may sound like a strange project for a fire department, but it actually makes perfect sense. Many of you probably know that the USS New York was fashioned from steel from the World Trade Center, so FDNY firefighters have a close connection to the… Continue

A Show of Steel

NYC exhibition highlights naval warship built with WTC steel

By Jane Jerrard

There are countless memorials, tributes and remembrances to the victims who fell at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. But few are as powerful as the U.S. Navy’s new warship, the USS New York, whose bow was forged from 7 ½ tons of steel… Continue

COAL WAS WEALTH: Size-up basics you need to know

FireRescue magazine's Fireground Operations column

COAL WAS WEALTH: The basics of size-up, part 1

By Freddie LaFemina

As a young firefighter, I’d always run fire scenarios through my mind. Whether I was checking the apparatus prior to a tour, checking tools or responding to an incident, I’d always perform a mini size-up in my head. Using any information available, such as dispatch information, prior fires or fire prevention inspection… Continue

Misted placed TX Firefighter

The other day I was talking to my wife on the phone and she told me she was waching The Unit and they had a morter attice on it, and she couldnt under stand why I was mad about it. Well it comes down to this, the less she knows about what happens here the better off she will be. Just like in the fire service there are just some things you dont tell your wife or husband. It isnt so much that you are hiding something from them, it come down to there are just some things we cant tell them. I mean… Continue

Responses to Cadet/Explorers Posts

I don't know if anyone else out there besides the cadets and explorers feel the same way, but I am getting tired of reading responses to cadets and explorers posts that are seemingly attacking these young FFN members. I don't care if you disagree with them or not. Just don't attack them. You don't aggressively attack other members with lots of experience who make stupid posts nearly as much as you do the younger ones. I believe you all are just picking weak targets. Would you talk to your…

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...February 20, 2010 (what day is it? LOL)

To all you blog followers out there, I am sorry I haven't written lately!!!! Alot has happened since my last blog post, some good, some not so good, and some funny.

First for the funny stuff - one of the guys at our firehouse, a very experienced veteran, drove the ladder truck to a call about a mile or so away. General alarm call, nothing to speak about, and 15 minutes or so later was back…

Expectations/ financial

Let me start with something basic, expectation; even more basic, financial expectations. It is said that of all divorces about 90% of them are due to some type of financial reason. I would tend to agree with this, but what is that fiscal reasoning. I believe that it may be the lack of communication of fiscal expectation.…

Your personal relationship?

I have been contemplating for a few weeks about starting a regular blog on this site. I thought that it would be relatively easy to do, just start typing about something and make it interesting. Ok, not has easy as I thought it could be. I have to give a lot of “props” to the likes of Art and other fire service bloggers. You guys are constantly coming out with relevant topics to…
