I've been pursuing a full time job in the fire service for almost two years now. After a year of knocking on doors with no results, I decided in Aug 2007 to put myself through EMT school. About two weeks into classes, opportunity knocked. Alcoa Fire Dept called and offered me a chance to participate in an upcoming rookie school and a job as a reserve firefighter. While working 40 hours a week at my fulltime job, going to EMT classes two nights a week, and rookie school classes two nights a… Continue

Up and Down and All Around

1. That if a person says that they will teach me something, make sure that they don't have an audience that they are playing too.…

BEING A MOTHER

: After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. She said, 'I love you, but I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you.'

* * *The other woman that my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been a widow for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally.

* * *That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a…

You Know You're A Firefighter When...

LODD...is it really?

Line of Duty Death is something none of us wants to put our families, friends, or community thru...thats you folks.

Our job is to fix the problem, not compound it. When are we as a group going to figure that out? Really...how many "LODD's" is it going to take before someone says, "Hey maybe we should not call unsafe responses anything other then what they are...a hazard to our communities".

10 mph over is the law...seat belts are the law...when conditions allow…

A Firemen's Life

It may take you two minutes to read this, but if you do NOT take the time to read this you are one of the PEOPLE this post is TALKING ABOUT. You stay up for 16 hours He's been up for 48 straight You take a warm shower to help you wake up. The rain in the middle of the interstate keeps him awake. You complain of a "headache", and call in sick. He's chilled to the bone, hasn't eaten all day, has the flu, and then runs into a burning building You drink your coffee on your way to the mall. He pumps… Continue

Howdy

Well it's great to be here. I've been with my current department now for 2 1/2 years. Came to it with ZERO experience and within 8 months, made LT and was elected as Captain 38 in the June 07 elections. It's been a great run here in Lexington Park. We have 6 E450 boxes, 2 rapid response cars and one F150 Utility/Command truck (U39). We've got about 120 members strong from all walks of life and we're still growing. It's going to be hard leaving here and starting over again but I plan on… Continue

I make wood firehouse signs which are done very tasteful. They can be of any any… Continue
