Fallen Firefighter Remembered

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― A young firefighter was killed in Baltimore in a raging fire as a granite wall collapsed. It happened 13 years ago, but he was solemnly remembered Wednesday night.

Suzanne Collins has more on the dedication to firefighter Eric Schaefer.

The fire at Clipper Mill is one few will forget. But the city remembers the huge catastrophe that resulted from it and dedicated efforts of one young firefighter who died that night.

The Job

Well I have been backing Dekalb 911 since March 1st and I can honestly say it has been eye opening! School can get you ready for the job or so you think. School can teach you how to do your job but it doesn't teach you how to deal with the the emotion that come's when you see death. Don't get me wrong, I love my job and I think I have the best job in the world. Where else can you wave at a cop as you run a red light? But when you have to do CPR on someone for awhile and then to have the Drs. at… Continue

One of Delawares PM Killed

A Sussex County paramedic and an 82-year-old patient were killed early Tuesday when the ambulance they were riding in swerved to miss a deer and smashed into a tree.

"We are having our worst day," said Glenn Luedtke, Emergency Medical Services director, while choking up Tuesday and nearly unable to speak. "We are a family."

Killed were paramedic Stephanie L. Callaway, 31, and patient Betty J. Hall, both of Lewes. Callaway was in the rear of the ambulance attending to… Continue

Leaving the slideshow up...

But as an addendum to the thoughts expressed in it, the City of Providence finally saw the errors of their ways and passed the "Presumptive Cancer Ordinance", which essentially states that if a firefighter contracts cancer, it is considered job-related and if they have to retire, they can still receive their retirement benefits. There is a very ugly political story behind it, but that's neither here nor there. Ugly politics is business as usual everywhere, I'm sure.

Point is that the… Continue

In Iraq

I made it to Iraq on 7 July. It is hot here as you would expect. Days are long but not monotonous. I have some of the best people I have met in my years in the Air Force here with me. We have an amazingly strong joint relationship amongst the US Forces. That is really new to me also.

There have been a couple attacks but the insurgents can't aim. God really shields this place well. The daily temperatures are around 120 degrees. There are some things here I can't really speak of but I… Continue

Brass Hydrant Parts Proving To Be Lucrative For Thieves

Start taking a closer look at your hydrants in your area folks! The downturn in the economy has brought about a new target for those turning metal into cash.

The brass top operating nuts of hydrants can net a tidy sum of money for thieves and it's happening in Northern Virginia. Without the operating nut, the hydrants are rendered inoperable (depending on the hydrant model).

Add this to your list of things you should do while performing district familiarization.… Continue

A moment to remember a forgotten squad

Well a sad day has come... My volunteer rescue squad has been shut down by the County I live in becasue of political greedy people that care nothiing about the community but only about themselves. They actually pushed out all the volunteers in our county. It breaks my heart because when I moved to NC 5 years ago it was the first thing that I joined. It was the first fellowship I have ever belonged to. I recieved my EMT certificate and went out and saved some lives, helped those that were sick… Continue

Garage fire

Yesterday (7/13/08) our Dept responded to a garage fire, My engine company was first due and we initiated an attack thru the front door to the interior door to the garage. Initially there was impingement at the door frame and that was extinguished, I was trying to open the door easy so we could attack the fire from the doorway once opened. As it would be the door did not open easily, and when it did it swung open quickly and the flames rolled at my partner and I, all I could see was a face… Continue

Doesn't our job make you think?

It's been a few days now, but on the night of the 4th of July, we got a nasty accident call. I just knew one would come in- it's a holiday, it's a beautiful night, and my district is surrounded by country back roads. We got called to the scene on mutual aid for the next town over- the scene was two vehicles involved in a t-bone accident, at least 6 patients, two choppers already in the air for us. 5 departments sent apparatus to the scene. There were 4 teenagers in the vehicle that was t-boned;… Continue

Firefighter To Be Charged With Attempted Murder Over A Woman

It is said that women can drive men do the darndest things. We can get so caught up in a woman that we'll go off the deep end if anyone even thinks about looking at our girl. Would I try to kill someone over a woman? Hell no! Apparently one firefighter would.

We hear that police plan on charging a Springfield, MA firefighter with attempted murder after an assult that left a 45-year-old man with a slashed throat! And yes, this… Continue

Increasing Wildland Fires - What Do We Do About It

I don't know how many of you are wildland fire responders, but would be interested in your opinions.

You might have heard that Congress has passed legislation the help fund the Forest Service in firefighting. The USFS budget is one amount for firefighting AND funding the National Parks. As fires get worse, they have had to take money from the parks budget to pay for firefighting. I have NO OPINION about USFS management, but would say, in their defense, that they get a lot of flack… Continue

I'm Finally On My Own!!!

It is a scary thing moving out on your own for the first time... but also very exciting. For one, you are free to do what ever you want - within legal limits of course. If you want to stay out late, you don't have to report to anyone, especially your parents. No one is there to tell you what to do. I know my parents love me, but I am quicker to move out while I still know it all. (And that is a figure of speech), because everyone reaches that age sooner or later, and if you hadn't, you're…
