In the quiet little town of Baltimore, Ohio, fires don't happen very often. And, it seems that when they do, it's never during my shift! For two months, I'd been working both as a volunteer and as a paid firefighter/EMT, taking a few medic runs, but never seeing fire. All that changed last week! I had picked up an overnight shift on Tuesday and was preparing to go home Wednesday morning. Freshly showered and packed up, I was ready to go as the day crew had all arrived. I'd started up my car (it…

Venting before exploding
before you read to far be for warned this is written by one pissed off firemen and father. The reason for this vent is stupidity in the upper ranks of our fire hall. My daughter finally talked me into joining after she had been a member for the last year and half. Then a newbie in the hall decided to get grabby and proposition my daughter of 15. Keeping in mind this idiot is 25 year old with a 4th grade education , yes for real he can’t even…

Last night was agood reminder of why I enjoy this job so much.I know,I don't get paid for it,but, I consider it my duty to help out the community in any way I can.And this is where I have found my calling.
I'm not like some who are born into it or it's a family thing.I went to one call and I found myself wanting to help others.I wanted to be there to do what I could no matter how small the job or what the sacrifice.I found where I belong.
I found the brotherhood and the connection…

Hey...
A cowardly gunman dressed in a suit and tie walked into a Wendy's restaurant in Palm Beach County (Florida) at lunchtime today, killing a Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue Lieutenant who was on his lunch break. The lunatic then went on shooting four others before turning the gun on himself. The Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue Lieutenant was taking a lunch break from training and met his wife and child at the restaurant. The 42-year-old Firefighter and his family had just left the…

I will be moving to Amarillo in a few months. I am interested in joining a VFD. I am finishing up my last few months of nursing school and know my calling is in critical care, emergency and trauma. I have worked in a stepdown critical care unit for over a year as a nurse tech and i really like it. I am kind of a adrenaline junkie(runs in the family) and know i want to someday get my EMT-P. I could one day see myself as a Flight Nurse/Paramedic. My plan is right now to move to amarillo, work in…

Earlier today, I read something about yet another senseless shooting in Wendy's in West Palm, Florida. I didn't pay too much attention to it. I wasn't feeling well today and more bad news just wasn't sitting well.
So, I just read the headlines on my Yahoo and saw that one of the victims was a newly promoted lieutenant with West Palm Beach FD, shot in the back by a damn coward while his family waited in the parking lot.
I've known some of the West Palm firefighters from…

Who'da thunk it? I gotta tip my hat to Hillary Clinton for this (see Fox News for this 1):
After Gloria Steinem made some very disparaging & disgusting remarks about John McCain's POW experience while endorsing the "Queen Bee", Hillary & her campaign disassociated herself from those remarks quickly & in a big way.
I gotta hand it to her, she showed some class & a certain amount of maturity here.
Good to see in the middle of a political campaign, ain't it?
So,…

St. Patrick's day is coming up. A holiday filled with the spirit of the Irish, and filled usually also with the beer of your choice. As a first responder (especially if you are a firefighter or a cop) this entitles you to full-fledged Irish-ness for a day.
Be advised...I'm now going to change gears and put in a plug for cash.

Caught a fire right before the end of my 24. 1st Truck to a vacant 1 1/2 story residential. Heavy fire throughout the attic. Went to the roof and opened a small hole before chief told us to come down. Engines had trouble accessing the fire due to the fact there were no stairs. Eventually things got done. We went home about 90 minutes after getting there.

I was in Johannesburg lecturing at a conference when a firefighter came up to me. “Paul, all the text books on fire-fighting tactics seem to take it for granted that there is going to be adequate resources and staffing on-scene at every structure fire. Furthermore, just about all of the standard operating procedures I have seen are written for staffing of five and above. In our little town we will get three firefighters responding to a structure fire on a single engine and they will be there…

This morning the Grove City VFD (PA) was dispatched to a dwelling fire with reported persons trapped at a side by side duplex. Additional alarms were called for from the Pine Twp FD and a RIT from East End VFD. The 1st in crews initiated fire attack and started a search on the less involved side. GREELEY — Volunteer Fire Captain Shane Stewart was remembered in Greeley today as a fellow with an impish grin, a mischievous streak and the kind-hearted father of two who went out of his way to help others.
Between laughter at some of his practical jokes and a large screen picture of Stewart in drag, there were heart-felt words of condolence and loss.
"He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him," said Scott Wagner, the…
