KS FIREFIGHTERS BURNED AT WILDLAND FIRE

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Two firefighters from McPherson are in fair condition at a Wichita hospital today after they were injured while battling a grass fire north of Hutchinson.
The men, ages 21 and 43, suffered minor burns and could be released Sunday, a hospital supervisor said.

Emergency dispatchers said the fire was reported at 12:22 p.m. in southwest McPherson County near the Rice County line.

Inman Fire Chief Dennis Schroeder said the fire may have been started by sparks coming from an old truck that was seen driving through the area.

Schroeder said the injured firefighters were in a fire truck that apparently got stuck in some sandy soil before it was overrun by flames.

One firefighter was taken by air ambulance to Via Christi Medical Center-St. Francis Campus. The other was taken by ambulance to the same hospital.

Firefighters from seven departments battled the blaze before it was brought under control shortly before 6 p.m.
