It's 3am and I hear the tones drop for a bleeding call. Sounds like ALS, and I'm not first run, anyway. I roll over in bed as I try to ignore the sounds of my partners moving around. The light in my bunk room turns on, and I hear Drew telling me to get up.

"No," I say adamantly.

"No?"

"No. I'm not first run."

"Come on dearheart," he says, "it's a BLS leaky catheter call and the career staff doesn't want to get up." Cursing them as I throw on my boots, I head out to the rig.… Continue

The Continuing Chronicles of the FNG(irl): The Swearing In

It was a little daunting for me at first, because I was being sworn in at the monthly business meeting, and other than the chief, didn't really know too many others, and the room (apparatus bay) was PACKED to the rafters with the members.

Here's what I can tell you about my department....everyone is named Frank, Bill or Ernie. I figure I have a 35% chance of getting it right. Oh, and I'm old enough to be my Lieutenant's mother. They also take their Sunshine Fund 50/50 raffle very…

on having electricity put thru your muxcles

had my first pre-op Physical Therapy session today... didnt do much exercise wise, but got a take home sheet of exermercises...

what we mainly did is use the e-stim which is where they basically electrocute you muxcles so that they spasm which makes them basically get a workout without me physically working them

it was the WEIRDEST feeling I have ever felt...... like it was a cross between tickling and how it feels when you run into a dog electric fence... and the whole time… Continue

I’ve never met a firefighter that didn’t love their job. But I know plenty who don’t appreciate it.

After paying for my own Firefighter/ EMT training, I worked for about six years or so volunteering and working part time as a mercenary Firefighter for several departments. All the while working a regular fulltime job doing everything from commercial painting to Jail guard. I took every firefighter exam within a hundred miles and applied with anywhere hiring fulltime firefighters.…

Crutches are the tools of the devil....and mean people

So, I go to the doctor's office on Friday because my knees sound like a rice crispy bomb going off whenever I change elevation. I've always had bad knees and I finally was convinced to go see someone (this was after the attempt to self medicate with glucosamine, etc.)

The doctor took four x-rays in the office and talked to me for about five minutes. The conversation went something like, "Holy crap, you have really bad knees. Which one hurts the worst? The left one? Ok, we'll scope you…

Retirement Thoughts

As I stated in by first Blog entry, I'm

just about retired. Even though I still enjoy going to work,

interacting with my crew and fellow Firefighters, being challenged on

calls, and dealing with the day to day BS that we all have to deal

with, I'm getting a bit tired. As I sit here at my computer at home,

I'm on the fourth day of my six day break wondering where the first

three days went. When I first started my career, I hated six day

breaks…
