I’ve never met a firefighter that didn’t love their job. But I know plenty who don’t appreciate it.

After paying for my own Firefighter/ EMT training, I worked for about six years or so volunteering and working part time as a mercenary Firefighter for several departments. All the while working a regular fulltime job doing everything from commercial painting to Jail guard. I took every firefighter exam within a hundred miles and applied with anywhere hiring fulltime firefighters. Finally, at the age of twenty nine I stuck gold. I was hired fulltime with the Columbus Division of Fire. So when I find myself about to complain about having to do some of the not so exciting jobs we do. Such as Inspections, school programs, checking hydrants or even training, (you know what we do between saving people from burning buildings on the engine or ladder or snatching the dying from the arms of the Grim Reaper on the medic) I try to Cowboy up! They are all very important activities and probably save just as many lives as anything else we do. (maybe even one of our own). And if you, like me sometimes still can’t help whining or running to check your logs to see if it’s really your turn to do a chore then do what I do. Remember what it was like where you used to work before the fire service. And if you have never worked another job before the fire service. Then trust me, you don’t know what real work is! and Mc Donald’s is always hiring. GIT R DONE!
