Losin' a Brother

Well, we lost another one of our brothers on September 3, 2008. I'm not ready to see another name of someone I was so close to on that memorial in Emmitsburg. Greg lived a great life though and I'm always going to admire his amazing sense of humor which always kept all of us in the house laughing. I took my 240 hour firefighter with Greg and I can still remember him in full bunker gear getting pushed around the halls of this old nursing home we were doing search and rescue training in. I sure… Continue

Remembering 9/11

My sister wrote this poem the other day and she shared it with me. I thought it was so good that we shared it with our department and now I would like to share it with all in our field.

Rich

We stared in wonder

Bowed our heads in sorrow

Looked to Heaven for answers

And cursed the Gates of Hell.

We were rescued

But we were not saved

We were injured

But never cured.

They came to us

They risked their lives

They… Continue

I didn't do anything special on September 11, and here's why...

Remembering the firefighters, police officers, and medics who were killed on 9/11/01 is important; in fact it's so important that I have included it into the culture of my average workday. I have visual memory triggers to help me remember, including 9/11 memorial decals on both my personal and work vehicles. I wear a bracelet memorializing Captain Terry Hatton of FDNY Rescue 1. Helmet stickers, check.

There are two even more important things I do on a routine basis. The first is that… Continue

Scary Night

Ok so I had been watching the forecast and I knew it was supposed to rain for like the next 3 days straight here in Lawrence, but I had no idea what we were really in store for! After getting repeated pages from Dg. county emerg. management saying we were in a flood warning, I was about to pull my hair out because I was tired of hearing the same thing. Pretty soon though, about 5 min. from the last flood warning page, I hear all the tones drop. It was a weather message, but from dispatch this… Continue

The Day After

I have been running this week and not in the office much, today I spent my lunch hour hunched over a bowl of ramen and a magazine wishing away a sinus headache, with lots of bloggy-bits whirling around my head, nothing cohesive. I wanted to write a 9/11 post, in fact, I composed one in my head, and all the images of that day so overwhelmed me that I never got it written.

Every time I go to tell the story it starts out "I remember that it was a perfect day". Perfect, blue sky, no… Continue

Scott's Random Thoughts

Thought I would start a blog today so here goes.It was a tough day yesterday on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on american soil.In an odd twist of fate I found myself in the exact same spot on the exact same road as I was on Sept. 11th 2001.it really got me thinking about my life and how that helped my decision to become an EMT.At least some good things came out of it-I'm an EMT,I was finally able to come out and for the last year and 1 month I have spent every day with my… Continue

Cadet firefighter needing your prayers

We have a 15 year old cadet in our department that has cancer.

The cadet had a tumor on his brain that was removed (not completely), and the MRI revealed that the cancer spread to his spine. He has a passion for the fire service. When he found out about the cancer he was worried about missing school and also missing his 160 class (FF1). Before his first surgery he was practicing his ropes and knots with all the machine wires that were attached to him. The only family he has is his… Continue

reflection

I did not have time yesterday with all the calls and rain that seemed to come our way all day long but I wanted to post this in memory of a lost friend in the pentagon attack. I look around sometimes and forget how truly blessed I am. I want to take the time and tell everyone that had been there for me, stood beside me when the light at the end of the tunnel seemed very dim, cheered me on or just cheered me up. Thanks for being firefighters, paramedics, medics, nurses, and anyone who chooses a… Continue

Heartless or Funny?

Ok so I was listening to my local Christian radio station a few days ago and out of nowhere they start playing "Jingle Bell Rock." I was a little confused to say the least but I played along, listened for a while, and pretty soon the dj gets on. She says she has a little list to brighten our days, make us laugh a little. Her little list was entitled, "Why Hurricanes are Like Christmas." Now I can't tell you all of the like 10 reasons, but I know a couple of them were.."A hurricane is like… Continue

Ike is already kickin our butt.

Here in South Carolina the great gas crunch is back. The price is expected to go from 3.41 a gallon to over 4.50. All of our training, and meetings, and everything has been called off due to the rise in fuel. This not only hurts our ability to respond, but also our wallets as volunteers. What cost me 45.00 today will cost me double that by this time next week. Not only that we are gonna lose alot of help on scene cause of the price of gas. I dont know how its affecting you but this makes me a… Continue
