Down time games

When I first joined my department I found that the older members after a meeting, drill, work detail or even on a Sunday morning or at quick call on a Monday night would play a card game called Euchre. Now let me tell you, I love card games and I am always willing to learn how to play a new game.

In my department I was lucky cause I knew all the guys that played so, they decided in their great wisdom to teach me this game. It is not an easy game to learn and I will tell you don't try… Continue

Thank You All

I want to thank all who responded to my forum on training fires, I appreciate all the responses and it definitely helped with my thoughts on them, and gave me a whole new perspective on what to do, and to help the newer people on the department.
Again a Big Thank You to All who Responded

PRAIRIEVILLE — When Ashley Norton and Andrew Sanchez signed up to be junior firefighters, it wasn’t just a passing phase.

The Dutchtown High School students both have been junior firefighters with the Prairieville Volunteer Fire Department for more than a year.

The two teens were recently named Junior Firefighters of the Year by the Knights of Columbus.

Brent Villenurve, firefighter and junior… Continue

Election Time.....

Well here in the states we are preparing to elect a new president. Meanwhile those of us in the volunteer service are preparing for the time honored tradition of electing new officers. It's the time of year all sorts of stuff happens around the fire house. Member's you haven't seen all year start showing up, so to be sure they're eligible to vote. Friendships are broken and alliances are formed. Usually some young guy's start campaigning on the change platform. The he said she said rumor mill… Continue

Medics Lab

Well Medics lab was more or less a review of patient assessment; still have a test on it Tuesday morning though. It was kind of weird though cause some how I ended up in a group of ladies and when we went through the motions of trauma rapid assessment each of us had to be the victim and rescuer. Talk about awkward knowing that the person you are going to touch really isn’t hurt and being of the opposite sex wow that was tough. Although we all made it through the drill, all of us and the… Continue

Daily Dumbass October 3, 2008

Here is today's daily dumbass. From KCMQ's website.

Today’s dumbass is a female would-be bank robber who doesn’t have the stones to follow through. She went into a bank in Long Island, New York, and gave the teller a note saying she would open fire if the teller didn’t hand over her cash. The teller looked at the robber and said “Are you serious?” Apparently this was enough to spook the robber, who left without a dime and never showed a gun. OK… Continue

Officer Down-Clallam County, WA State

Kristine Fairbanks was the only U.S. Forest Service Officer in the state of Washington to have a canine police partner-one of only 40 others in the United States. She was killed Saturday Sep 20th by a suspicious subject she was checking out. Less than 7 hours after Officer Fairbanks was shot and killed at a local Olympic National Forest campground, her killer was shot to death by Clallam County Sheriff's deputies at a local convenience store where the subject had entered shortly after employees… Continue

Daily Dumbass October 2, 2008

Here is today's daily dumbass from KCMQ.com (a local radio station). Original can be viewed here.

Some people just can’t handle their booze. A woman in Middletown, Ohio was arrested after chasing children, urinating on a neighbor’s porch, and blocking traffic….all while wearing a cow costume. The arresting officer says the woman reeked of alcohol, slurred her speech, and was belligerent. She was booked, released, and told to go home and stay… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

This has been a tough week around our firehouse. One of our most beloved firefighters, Sam, passed away last week and today is his funeral.

Sam was our dedicated secretary at our meetings, sick and all. I only grew to really know him the last six months, when I would sit with him and other retired members of our firehouse talking about life, old times they shared, and family. Sam would always lift my spirit. How couldn't he? He came in almost every afternoon, oxygen tank beside him,… Continue

Firemans and a Rescuers Prayer

Fireman's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God...

Where ever flames may rage...

Give me the strength to save some life...

Whatever be its age...

Help me embrace a little child...

Before it is to late...

Or save an older person from...

The horror of that fate...

Enable me to be alert...

And hear the weakest shout...

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out...

I want to fill my calling and...

To give the… Continue

Police Dispatcher's Prayer

Lord,They're In Our Hands Tonight,Yours And Mine-

Those Guys And Gal's Who Keep The Peace And Fight The Crime.

They're Men With Wives And Families,

And Feelings, too.

They Give Themselves For Our Protection,Those Men In Blue.

I know My Part In This Is Crucial, Too.

I Must Inform Those Men In Blue.

When Trouble Strikes, And Where.

And Send Them Quickly, No Time To Spare.

I Cannot See The Scene From

Where I Sit. My Eyes And Ears Scan The… Continue

I'll Show You A Volunteer

Show me a person who spends endless hours in training without pay,

And, I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person where a cry for help brings split-second dispatch,

And, I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person who is devastated when lives are lost or maimed,

And, I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person who is graciously welcomed as a next-door neighbor,

And, I'll show you a volunteer.

Show me a person who takes ridicule… Continue

New to blogging

I am an old timer when it comes to the net. Started out in the days of the BBS and 1200 baud modems. But I am new to blogging. Just something that is hard for me to get my teeth into but may try some of these poems that have been emailed to me and then go from there. Some yall may have seen before, hopefully not. But figured start with these and see how it works.

Class

Well class today wasn't what I thought the instructor was going to cover, Initially since the wind storm he was going to keep us longer today and make up one day of class combining two into one but that wasn't so. Now we have to make sure we cover the material ourselves which isn't to bad, but still would have been best in class, at least we have a week in order to read over the material and get ready for the 2nd exam.

What is the highest compliment you can give another firefighter?

Earlier in my career, I made the mistake of thinking that being a firefighter was about me. I sometimes sat around the firehouse and wished for bad things to happen to other people because I was bored. I was completely overwhelmed with testosterone and adrenalin poisoning. I did stupid things, partially because back then stupidity was an entrenched part of firefighting culture, partially because I had the mistaken belief that I was going to live forever, and partially because I was selfish and… Continue

Thoughts from the Land of Ike

What a time we've had here in Southeast Texas the last couple of weeks. Ahead of Hurricane Ike over 2 million people evacuated. After Ike over 2 Million were without power. In fact as of this morning almost 3 weeks later about 35,000 customers are still without electric power. According to a figure I saw the other day about 400 people are still unaccounted for.

I have also observed several things to take note of for the future as my community and I have gone through… Continue
