Last Responder not First Responder

Recently the Wellsboro Fire Department was notified that a local business was removing an existing fire sprinkler system during a significant remodeling effort. Naturally the Fire Chief called to express his, and the department’s, disappointment and offer some suggestions about retaining the operating system. Principally he mentioned that there has never been a multiple loss of life in a fully sprinklered building and that fire sprinklers are widely recognized as the single most effective… Continue

Daily Dumbass November 21, 2008

Sorry for the delay in posting the Daily Dumbass. I have been in New Mexico for work. Here is the next posting taken from KCMQ.com.

Driving under the influence is bad enough….now throw texting into the deal, and it’s a tragedy waiting to happen. 21-year-old Jeffrey Woods of Huntington Beach is today’s dumbass. He was driving high on drugs while texting someone to negotiate a drug deal, when he hit and killed a 14-year-old boy on a bicycle. Now… Continue

FIRE MONKEYS

A man walks into a pet store and is looking around when he

spots a Chimpanzee in a cage marked, "$1000".

The

man looks a little closer and discovers that the chimpanzee

is wearing a T-shirt bearing the

Maltese Cross and is cleaning a fog nozzle.

Curious about

this, the man summons the storekeeper and asks him what the

deal is with this thousand dollar monkey.

"Sir, You

have discovered our Fire Service Monkeys".

This one is… Continue

What are YOU doing to make it better? What are YOU doing to make it worse?

Well, it looks like that last blog was a possible hit. I think we all know the people I was referring to, we’ve all seen them, worked around them and we’ve all wondered the same questions. Why are you here?

So, I may have stepped on some toes with that, if so….I’m not really sorry, if you were offended, then you need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Which will lead into rule #6. We all need to take a hard look in the mirror. As I say this, I am stepping on my own toes. We must… Continue

Fire causes $60,000 damage at Tonawanda auto shop

City of Tonawanda fire officials suspect that a faulty waste-oil furnace may have sparked a fire that left $60,000 damage to an auto-repair facility on Young Street early this morning.

Firefighters from the City of Tonawanda responded to a 3:16 a.m. alarm at Mike Barry Motors, 147 Young St., after a passer-by spotted the blaze. Fire officials called for mutual aid, leading… Continue

The Role of the Fire Instructor

Fire instructors play a critical role in the development of firefighters. When the recruit begins training, their first exposure to the fire service is the instructor. That experience can often determine the firefighter’s view of training and future classes. Looking back through one’s career in the fire service, or life in general, it is easy to pinpoint teachers and instructors who have made a great impact. What were some of the characteristics of these instructors? What was it about them that… Continue

Question: Why are you a member of the Raymond Volunteer Fire Department?

Back in 1998 when I applied to be apart of the Terry Volunteer Fire Department, there was a question on the application that said, "Why do you want to be a volunteer fireman?" I answered it "to help people in my community." My answer should have been, I want to have a red light, drive fast, and look cool!

A volunteer is someone who serves in a community primarily because they choose to do so. By definition, a volunteer does not get paid or receive compensation for services… Continue

God's Plan for Salvation

THE STEPS OF SALVATION

Step 1: Hear the Gospel and Recognize Your Condition

You must hear the gospel and then understand and recognize that you are lost without Jesus Christ no matter who you are and no matter what your background is. The Bible tells us that "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) Before you can be saved, you must understand that you are lost and that the only way to be saved is by obedience to the gospel of Jesus… Continue

The Volunteer Firemen

The Volunteer Fireman

Volunteer firemen are a breed unto themselves.

Whoever heard of a person who is willing to be on twenty-four hour duty without pay for the dubious privilege of protecting his neighbor’s life and property?

Whoever heard of a person who will dash from his job and ride a “fire engine” to the scene of the alarm ruining their clothing, neglecting their business or whatever they were doing, risking their life and exhausting them self physically,… Continue

Try Your Hardest, Be the Best

Try Your Hardest, Be the Best

We have to make the best of everything. We have the best job in the world, But there are still firefighters that don't give it their all and try their hardest at this job. You worked you butt off to get here i know i did and yet you treat this job as second nature like nothing will phase you. You think just because you made it here that now you can just quit working hard and become lazy. The truth of the matter is that lazyness is killing the fire… Continue

You are Disposable

We live in a society that has changed dramatically from what our parents and grandparents knew. They lived through the Great Depression. We didn't. They knew how to do a lot of work with a little machinery and a lot of poorly-paid or unpaid manpower. We have to do the same amount of work with a little more machinery, fewer but slightly better-paid manpower, or fewer numbers of unpaid manpower. They knew how to re-use simple items until they wore out or broke beyond repair. They returned glass… Continue

Full Time college work and full time job with family and fire dept duties...... wow

Yes talk abot a lot on you plate, I'm a full time dispatcher, just finished college work for an AA degree in Fire Science, with a family of four and of course my duties as fire chief. Having completed my college studies, some of the stress will be relieved for now. The family fun with my wife and children never gets dull or stressfull, as a matter of fact that is kind of my stress reliever. Don't get me wrong, I love my job and the duties at the fire house can be delegated out, so not so much… Continue
