Back in 1998 when I applied to be apart of the Terry Volunteer Fire Department, there was a question on the application that said, "Why do you want to be a volunteer fireman?" I answered it "to help people in my community." My answer should have been, I want to have a red light, drive fast, and look cool!
A volunteer is someone who serves in a community primarily because they choose to do so. By definition, a volunteer does not get paid or receive compensation for services rendered.
Now almost 10 years later, I'm asked the question again. My mission about being a volunteer fireman has changed a lot over the years. I have studied the Bible and read,
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 and read "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13. We are to be followers of Christ, to be like Him. So, in reflecting Mark 10:45, we must not come to be served, but to serve, and to give our life as a ransom for the one needing help. So I asked God to make me a servant and I use my volunteering as a ministry. Maybe in some way I can help someone in there time of need and they can see Christ living in me.
