The Continuing Chronicles of the FNG(irl): Unofficially Official

Well, props to my chief, he didn't want me to have to wait another week or so to get the arson check back and then have to wait for the letter from the department, so.....drumroll.........

I'm unofficially officially IN !!!

I'll be getting sworn in at the next department business meeting (first Tuesday in February), that is, of course, as long as my arson background check comes back clean.

They can't count that time my sisters and I set the garage on fire when I…

I am carrying the following:

I have door stops (wooden), a needle nose pliers, standard slip jaw pliers, and channel locks for hand tools, EMS shears and a automatic center punch.... granted I have the nomax hood and fre gloves... I am looking for a cheaper pair of MVA / Extraction gloves to…

How I feel

People aren't training enough, and with that they become more complacent which could get them killed. Old habits die hard, old firefighters need to learn to stop there old habits and traditions, and start teaching new probies safer and smarter techniques. Back to the basics is how i train, not matter what a firefighter is never to experienced to get back to the basics.

Hello why I'm here!

Ok.... I signed up to find new friends in an occupation that I have so much honor for. I was watching a video on this site about firefighter strength and how it's like no other strength. I believe that to be very very wholeheartedly.. true. Anyways, to make myself clear, I am not a firefighter, ems person, etc. My situation is just helping as a volunteer whenever and whereever needed in my local city. WFD has some awesome people who volunteer their time constantly so I figured why not help…

drill tonight

Second Tuesday every month is drill for us. Tonight was actually a really good night.

All of the things I have done for the fire dept so far... none of them has involved an SCBA. Well since fire school is in Feb. here... one of the guys took me aside and gave me 1 on 1 SCBA training tonight. Both the newer units and one of the older units. I am glad I finally got a prep lesson in that... yea while I get to take an 8hr class on it... there could always be some emergency before fire… Continue

A new beginning

I feel like I was handed my life back today. I got the results from my surgery and well, it was good news. I do not have breast cancer (thank God) but I have to bne way more cautious because I was maybe a month away from it turning into full blown cancer. My husband and I can now breathe a long breath of relief. I could dance right now I am so happy (the pain is the only thing stopping that). I still have to call all my family and tell them the good news. Anyway, thanks for listening and… Continue

Goin' to see the sights!

I don't know if you can really consider this topic blog-able....but I thought it would be a great way to start off a fact finding mission.

4 fellow firefighters and I are planning to head to NYC for a long weekend this spring. We would like to stay in Manhattan and are looking for clean & reasonable accomodations. Any Firefighters from the FDNY or who have travelled there have any ideas? If so....help would be appreciated!

If you think being a firefighter is tough, try being a firefighter's wife!!!

So, what do you want to know about me. My name is Staci. I live in Calvert County in Southern Maryland. I met my favorite firefighter at fire convention in Ocean City in June 1988. We were married in April 1992 and have 3 daughters and 1 son (so far!!).

Fire Service Survival.....Adapt and Overcome!

While speaking with a member of a neighboring department, I couldn't help noticing his references to "the ole days". He just couldn't understand why in the fire service today, we do the things that we do...Specifically regarding training."Well back in the old days we didn't even wear those stupid masks, let alone spend all that time training!", is pretty much how the conversation began. This view is shared by many firefighters in my area. I guess you could say I've made it somewhat of my…

Drew

My heart sinks as the tones drop. I know it's something bad; I can feel it in the air.

"Station 1," the dispatcher begins, "respond to 852 Westbury Lane for an unresponsive male." I look around; it's just Drew and me. Everyone else is still at the hospital on another call. Panicked, I pick up the radio.

"Station 1, central."

"Go ahead Station 1."

"Medic 1 will be en route; requesting ALS."

"10-4, Station 1."

As Drew starts the medic, I hear dispatch tone out for… Continue
