Does your house of worship have an AED? Many EMS and Fire Service professionals have expressed interest in helping to place an AED in their own house of worship – or other churches/synagogues in their communities. The Initial Life Support Foundation (ILSF) has created a special program to assist in doing so.
Despite tremendous advances in resuscitation medicine and community emergency services' best efforts, the percentage of "out of hospital" initiated, successful "saves" from…

Bear with me on this one. I am at work. My wife is at work. My children are at home. Here in lies the problem. Let me summarize the last 4,327,953 phone calls from home. Keep in mind I get a smaller percentage of them than my saintly wife receives, and when I am actually home my children gravitate to any other room in the home to avoid the “can you help me with this” question that I usually come up with as I see them idle in front of the, pick an appliance, TV, computer, microwave,…

The crash of two Washington, D.C., Metro commuter trains yesterday culminated in a response that involved at least six departments and hundreds of responders. Shortly after the D.C. Fire and EMS Department transferred command of the scene to the NTSB around 1 pm local time,
FireRescue/FirefigherNation.com caught up with several of the chiefs who were on scene during the incident, as well as Billy Hayes, director of public…

As the death toll in the D.C. Metro incident continues to rise, we're already getting some good information about the response. On our sister site,
Jems.com, Senior Editor Jennifer Berry interviewed D.C. Fire & EMS (DCFEMS) Medical Director and JEMS editorial board member Dr. James J. Augustine.
Augustine notes that it was a three-alarm assignment that brought more than 200 responders to the scene. Personnel needs were high because of warm…

I finally am the newest firefighter on the Brookfield Fire Dept. I have to admit after all this time, and several past officer positions, it is kinda wierd starting out in a new department!
I'm sure it won't be long before I get back into the swing of things, obviously I do know already they do a few things differently than I'm used to. I'll keep you all updated as I go. As always stay safe!

Ok, I am missing FFN so much because I hardly have time to check it. Beig in the province is draining me physically and mentally. I need to start fire fighting more often again, I wish we had a fire department here but sadly we do not. The Barangay told me they are planning on getting an apparatus within 6 months and I cannot wait that long.. I miss Pasig!!!!
Its Tuesday morning and most of the employees have gone home. Kate is still here working on paperwork such as attendance and…

On Saturday I spent a few hours at the Fire Expo here in San Diego. Organized by the
Burn Institute each year, the Expo combines firefighting demonstrations with safety messages to educate kids about fire safety and raise money for the Burn Institute’s programs that benefit children with burn injuries.
A key part of the Expo is the Burn Run, where dozens of fire apparatus parade by the spectators with lights flashing and sirens…

Over at
All Hazards Contemplations, we're observing a continuence of the
2009 Safety, Health, and Survival week, even though it technically ended yesterday. I'm sitting here sadly shaking my head. June has been a bad month for the U.S. Fire and EMS services. This month there have already been 10 reported…

Overall, a good article, except, the following: I agree the Family is first, and the Fire family 2nd. That is the way it should be. I disagree that Tiger feels it is many depts. trying to outdo the others. I differ strongly. Each funeral is slightly different! I feel we should see what the family wants for its loved one, see what the loved one did for the agency/jurisdiction, and try to accomodate the best way to honor him/her for the families' wishes.
Many times I have been to…

Your credibility should come from performance, not a battle-scarred image
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of traveling overseas to visit the Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire, England, as a participant of a United States/United Kingdom exchange program. In its 40-year history, the Fire Service College has established itself as one of the leading fire service academies in the world.
The size and complexity of the facility is absolutely…

I learned at work today that Swine flu has arrived. There are a few confirmed cases in a town named Hillsboro. They are being linked back to a bus that went to Kings Island (an amusement park about 45 min from here). I'm not really feeling the panic state that most are, but ya know these things happen. But I expect MANY more cases in the area now since the ppl with the virus went to an amusement park and presumably rode the rides and touched things there prior to their symptoms showing. The…

I had planned two drills this week for the 2009 Fire and EMS Safety and Survival week. One was cancelled due to severe weather responses and the other should go on as planned today. A fellow instructor and friend of mine were discussing that as we were trying to promote the "Courage to be Safe" program, we were met with statements such as "Oh we had that class" or "We had that once". For us, it is disheartening to hear. For the fire service, it is much more than disheartening. A colleague of…

My husband & I were the first to arrive on the scene of a head on collision involving a flatbed tow truck and a small passenger car on 6/18/2009. Here are links to the story in our local paper and from our local TV news station.

The baby is a boy!!! And a BAD one according to the ultrasound tech. He had himself in such a lovely position he was blocking views of about everything she NEEDED to see. HAA HAA That's DEF my baby! He had his face behind my bellybutton and his feet directed toward my right leg. She said he was very uncooperative with the process! Only issue is this positioning means he is currently BREECH. Grr at that. She said they may have me keep coming in to see if he changes position. I'm not stressing to…
