The coldest days so far in this winter and bought 2 house fires. No one got hurt, had a good turnout for both of them. Hope everyone has a safe year.

Well, ok…so “Probie-ness” isn’t a word, but I added it to my Word dictionary, so according to MY word processing software…it is now. Maybe I’ll add it to Wikipedia too---dazzle them with confusion….it lets you get away with all KINDS of hijinks and lunacy. Hmmm....maybe "Probiedom" would be more apt.
Anyhoo….”Probie-ness” … When I first joined the department, I felt so stupid and clumsy and green (read some of my
“Chronicles of the FNG (irl)" posts right here on FFN to get a…

I have finally done it.. I passed the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. I did my best on the test, and the scores proved that. So I have now completed my first step in the fire service. I am now a First Responder.

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...January 16, 2009
I started the day on a good note...it's Friday and on Fridays I wake up happy because I am a Eucharistic Minister and get to go see Mary in Cranford. And today I got my hair done and was visiting a friend in Garwood.
But then the call came. My child was being released from the treatment facility it took me months to get her into. Back to the shelter she goes, then to court, and then hopefully a facility that will help…

ok we had our junior meeting tonight and we were getting our certification in adult cpr. We got instructors from the red cross to teach the class. Well the first thing we learned was how to care for a conscious choking victim who's not breathing. Our president of the juniors (head advisers son) who is a a larger guy and his partner asked what to do to care for a person of his size since his partner could not get his arms around him in the correct technique.
Well one of the…

Hello everyone! Life has been busy, but, Im back to FFN!
Anyway, just looking for feedback on this one.
Fireground radio communications has been, in my opinion, a topic that for whatever reason, seems to go quiet or even go away when things go right or even wrong on the fireground. Radio operations seem to be classified by many as low regarding the topic of the next fire critique.
Why?
In my area, we are lucky enough to request a fireground talk around channel for any…

Hard times are on the horizon for myself and it will definitely not be an easy thing to deal with. Everybody is looking for a way out and or someone to blame for the current state of economic despair the country is in. I have never been the type to complain. Nothing is easy and nobody is going to just hand it to you. I contribute my ability to cope with adversity to being a firefighter. It is my first love It is all I know and in a sense all I do. Even my job/business revolves around fire…

Just a question for all the volunteers. During the bad weather hitting the Northeastern part of the country how many stations man thier department. And if so do they provide you with anything, bedding, food , etc.

Well it has been awhile since I have been on here and it quite frankly stinks....I enjoy chatting with my Brothers and Sisters. But things around the house are like totally crazy, between taking my daughter to preschool everyday, and the step kids to work, I have very little time to jump on here to see whats going on with everyone. I also had to take a break from going to school because of all I have mentioned as well, (which really sucks) but will get back into that soon enough hopefully. I…

I've been a volunteer firefighter for 10(ish) years, and an over the road trucker for the past 9 years. An on the job back injury Oct 3rd, 2007 has taken me out of commission from trucking. Going through the ringer trying to get it fixed, including unsuccessful surgery Jan 24th. My abilities are greatly diminished, but I try to be of some help on any calls. My lil red car, with its flashing LEDs, and the bright pink "accident ahead" sign manage to get some workouts, even with my not very…

This is my response to a stinging series of features recently published in the Wilmington, DE News-Journal regarding the failure of the volunteer system in the state. The News Journal writers printed a great many inaccuracies, manipulated response times and, in general, skewed their stories to place the volunteer fire service in as bad a light as possible.
Here is letter to the editor -- published as the series was being presented.
"America’s volunteer firefighters and…

When I grow up I want to be a firefighter.
Firefighter, firefighter, firefighter,
I want to be a firefighter.
Not just any firefighter but the best firefighter.
I’ll put on my pants and my boots.
I’ll put on my jacket and helmet.
I’ll put on my seatbelt….
And away we’ll go.
When I grow up I want to be a firefighter.
Firefighter, firefighter, firefighter,
I want to be a firefighter.

I finally have a few months left to go. This semester, my final one before receiving an Associate's of Applied Science degree in Fire Science, I am taking Criminal Law, Terrorism and Homeland Security, Firefighter II, Firefighter Safety and Survival, Concepts of Physical Fitness, and Emergency Vehicle Driving Operations. Once I graduate, however, I have no idea what I'll be doing or where I'll be doing it. It may be here in Arkansas and it may not be, just depends on where the jobs are located.
