take a fast quiz

http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz.html

This is a link to the world's smallest political quiz. It is 10 questions long, takes 2 minutes to take. See where you fall on the political landscape. I think about 20-25% of you will show up as libertarian, but you may not know that you are. Many people believe as I do, but have not put the L word to it. No matter how you score, let me know if it agrees with how you saw yourself before…

The Battle

The call comes in, and the dispatchers send out their tones. The adrenaline climbs, the blood rushes, a chill shoots to the bone. As the engines go enroute, the lights are flashing, setting their pace, smoke pouring into the sky marking the spot where the battle will take place. Units go on scene, the fight will soon be under way. The battle will not end until all the flames are washed away. The hoses are pulled out, and the lines are laid, turnout gear is put on, their weapons aimed, and…

Gone But Not Forgotten

Brother, when you weep fro me, remember that it was ment to be. Lay me down and when you leave, remember I'll be at your sleeve. In every dark hall, I'll be there as you slowly crawl. On every roof in driving snow, I will hold your coat, and you will know. In cellars hot with searing heat, at windows where a gate you meet. In closets whare children hide, you know I'll be there at your side. The house from which I now respond, is overstaffed with heros gone. Men who answered one last bell,…

Merry Christmas to all those fire junkies out there

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the town,

the fire siren echoed blaring its sound.

The firefighters came running from far and from near,

and raced to the trucks quickly donning their gear.

And I in my bunkers my boots and my hat,

jumped to the engine to see where the fire's at.

Down at the corner of Fifth and of Oak,

the dispatcher informed us of a house filled with smoke.

Smoke poured from the sides, from up and from down,

yet…

Cold Weather Firefighting

By: Lou Angeli

(St. Louis, MO) -- As weather experts debate the effects of El Nino on North American weather patterns, the "B" shift members of St. Louis Squad-2 don't really give a damn. Winter is on them, and the simple fact of the matter is it's getting cold.

Thanks for your help... But it's out of our hands now.

Editing my original post for suggestions and such regarding our department "consolidation".

No matter what we do, or how bad we don't want it to happen, nothing short of a miracle can save us. Our Department is destined to go. If not now, with dignity, eventually- and on worse terms. I have discovered that the people who this station means the most to are those with the littelest amount of pull when it comes to saving it.

I will let go. I will move on. I will hurt, a lot. But I…

Two dwelling fires same day

Yesterday was one of our busiest yet. We started the day with a relatively small fire at around 6 AM. It was accidental in nature & destroyed two rooms on the third floor of a house. That was under control within 15 minutes. Then at around 3:45 PM, we had another dwelling fire. This one was in Stroudsburg, the town we run dual response with. This time it was a row home that originally came in as room & contents. It quickly grew to include two of the row homes & threatened three… Continue

I'm Official!

I got the call this morning! I got on the department that I tested and interviewed for this past weekend. I feel strangely calm about it; I guess partly because I sort of knew I was going to get this one, and partly because now my joy is mixed with sheer terror. It's no longer a dream...now I have to walk the walk! I couldn't be more pleased and my family couldn't be more proud, although, their pride is also, like mine, mixed with terror. I don't actually get to work until February, because the… Continue

You know you are a firefighter when:

You know you are a firefighter when:

1. You can tell what type of fire it is by the smell of smoke 10 miles away.

2. You have ever had a heated debate over the color of fire trucks.

3. You have ever spent 10 min trying to force open a door only to have someone come along and open it by turning the handle.

4. You have ever taken 10 or more showers in 1 day.

5. You have ever been airborne without an aircraft and water was your thrust.

6. You have ever…
