The Safety Culture

Last weekend I attended the Everyone Goes Home

Summit at the National Fire Academy. First let me

say that it was my first trip there and it was very

impressive. If any of you ever get the opportunity,

take advantage of this resource and take in the

experience and knowledge offered there, along

with the great history of the area.

Now, on to the Summit and what I have been

pondering since I got back. The purpose of the

Summit can be summarized as an… Continue

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!!!

This is a day in the life of Denise Broesler, and an interesting story about automatic oil deliveries.

I am using a large well-known oil company and they wanted to deliver oil today. Since I had oil delivered last month, I asked them to stick the tank before they delivered the oil. So the guy comes and says the tank is empty, and can't understand how I could have gone through so much… Continue

Junior firefighter--training(Hose evolution)

I think I'm going to start blog posts, on mentionable trainings, mainly the ones I enjoy. Which I seem to enjoy everything, whether it be the mazes, or just sitting in the meeting room going over basics.

I did some vehicle rescue training, and some others, but I cant recall them good enough to go over them fully.

So I'll start with my most recent.--

Last Tuesday, we ended up doing hose evolutions, which i did once before but didn't really participate in, for the most part i… Continue

Small town dept.

I and a firefighter in a small vol. dept. in Waverly TN. We do get a lot of calls but it is awesome to go out every time and learn something new. Our chief is one of the best guys. He's very understanding and at the same time doesn't put up with any crap! I've learned more in the past year about people than any other time in my life. I couldn't ask for any better family. These guys (and girls) are the best!!

UTV grants and info

I am working to try to secure funding for a UTV for our department, to be used county-wide, for wilderness rescue, (usually involving an ATV accident in the woods), and fighting brush fires. I have researched a lot on the internet, and talked to several vendors. But what I really want is feedback from those who use them daily.

First, what BRAND of UTV seems to work best for everyone? Our application will mostly involve very hilly terrain and woods, although in most cases there should… Continue

Making Your PPE “Smart”

When you stop and think about it, a firefighter’s personal protective equipment (PPE) is downright amazing. You carry the air you’ll need on your back, cloaked in fire-resistant fibers that allow you to move through burning buildings; your boots are designed not to melt as your feet encounter burning materials, and your helmet has undergone years of testing to ensure that it affords the greatest protection against impact.

But these items that you wear and bring with you are… Continue
