Crutches are the tools of the devil....and mean people

So, I go to the doctor's office on Friday because my knees sound like a rice crispy bomb going off whenever I change elevation. I've always had bad knees and I finally was convinced to go see someone (this was after the attempt to self medicate with glucosamine, etc.)

The doctor took four x-rays in the office and talked to me for about five minutes. The conversation went something like, "Holy crap, you have really bad knees. Which one hurts the worst? The left one? Ok, we'll scope you…

Retirement Thoughts

As I stated in by first Blog entry, I'm

just about retired. Even though I still enjoy going to work,

interacting with my crew and fellow Firefighters, being challenged on

calls, and dealing with the day to day BS that we all have to deal

with, I'm getting a bit tired. As I sit here at my computer at home,

I'm on the fourth day of my six day break wondering where the first

three days went. When I first started my career, I hated six day

breaks…

Hillary Clinton Has Been Calling Me!

I don't know if it's because I am a firefighter. Maybe it's because I live in NJ and everyone is watching Super Tuesday for the 2008 Presidential Elections.......

Are you getting involved in the Presidential Election politics this year? Do you know who your candidates are and what they stand for? Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat you have the responsibility, duty and…

Awake and Sick

I have had this crap that is going around for 5 days now. I have slept more in the last 5 days than I did in a long time. It is 3:30am and I am wide awake. The only thing saving me is the fact that I am a Landscaper by trade and I am currently laid off. I don't have to be at work tomorrow so that is good. I have missed a couple of calls due to being under the weather. I really hate when that happens. Anybody got any advice for kicking the cold/flu? I have been trying to keep hydrated and eat…

Freelancing on the fire scene

Just wondering if any departments have problems within their own department or on mutual aid runs of firefighters "freelancing" on the scenes? If so, just wondering how you handle the situation?

OK, So here goes...

I've been thinking about starting a Blog for several years now. I don't know how much I have to say, or if what I say will interest anyone who tries to read it. Anyhow, what the heck, here I go.

I know that many of you (see, I really think that “many” of you out there will read this) may find my words a bit contrary to the Rah-Rah attitude of several if not a lot of the people who frequent Firefighter Nation (more on that in a later entry). For a time, I used to check in at… Continue

The Alarm

The alarm sounds the call goes out, someone is screaming, someone is scared, someone beilives they are going to die. We scramble to our feet, we know, we are going to meet another person on their very worst day. We will arrive on the scene of their call. Strength and courage thats what we have, going into an unknown. We fight ourselves every day, we get to them, we help them, we take them to a place were more of us wait and pray to help them to live another day. We put…

Welcome To My Personal Blog

Hi, welcome to my personal blog where I hope to share a little of me and my department with you. I may not be able to post here every day but I will certainly try to.

The latest news around the firehouse is Promotions and Elections for the Fire Service Sports and Social Club. Many of my fellow colleagues are anxious about the names of the successful candidates for promotions and when they will be released.

What is it?

Why would some want to be a part of your organization? Is there cache like being a Clydesdale pulling the Budweiser Wagon? Or is it something else? We recently brought on several new firefighters and we threw out the conventional wisdom and asked them, what made them chose emergency services.…

Numbness

The numbness falls over you the moment you know.

You quietly say a prayer,

and wish for every-one to continue on,

not stop and stare.

We know they are dead there's

nothing really we could do,

but we act and we try,

just like we were told in the books we read.

We keep them alive,

if only for a moment to try and preserve whats left

of their drive.

The lights are flashing, the siren is screaming,

the blood is…
