FIREFIGHTERS TEARS

The alarm rang, as it had so many times before. He was the first of the fireman up and out, Awakened from his bed at the station By the clanging of the bell. Engine 62 pulled out of the bay, Dispatch paged another station. And all the firemen aboard the truck Were tensed with anticipation

"Sounds like a job, boys," He said as he donned his gear. And the young jakes smiled at him As they drew ever near.

They turned onto his own street And he could see the fire's work He hoped… Continue

Fit in a Fire

After a lengthy spate of serious accidents we finally caught a fire. Three stations and two alarms later we stopped the fire in the garage next to the house. I had the third in engine and supplied the mop up crew. I haven't seen the guys from Station 10 in a while. They asked for a map to get home. Now it's back to medicals and…

Japanese Style

NY Times story

On the left is a fire extinguisher cabinet in Japan. On the right a young boy is showing his new "hiding spot" book bag. Japanese culture is about avoiding conflict and this item, they hope, will allow the boy to hide and the bully to pass by and not continue to bother him.

The story goes on to say that it may not have much use in the USA...Ya Think???

Another "hiding" photo:…

Code

"Station 2, unresponsive patient."

The tones drop for another county, interrupting my dream. Frustrated, I roll over in the bed as I hear station 2 and central dispatch corresponding.

"Medic 2 is en route."

"10-4."

"Medic 2 has arrived on scene."

"10-4."

"Central, show that we have a working code."

"10-4."

In my dream, I wonder about how little central dispatch ever seems to say. I hear the door creak open as light streams in the room. Someone pushes my… Continue

Leadership in Chautauqua County NY

I just wrapped up my "Leadership in the Firehouse" conversation with about 50 of the good folks in Chautauqua County tonight at the really cool Fredonia Opera House. What a great venue for an interactive conversation! And interactive it was with plenty of good discussion on people management and we even had quite a few good laughs too, mostly at my expense.

Hats off to Joel Biscaro and the Chautauqua County Chiefs for their commitment to the survival and success of the volunteer fire…

Break down

How embarrassing! Imagine being on a medical call and in the middle of transporting to the hospital when all of the sudden the medic unit breaks down. Sure these things happen once in a great while but this isn't the first time. This is becoming a habbit for my department sad to say. I'm only on the fire side but I can just imagine what those personel feel like when this happens. Sure things go wrong with vehicles like a flat tire, needs a new starter, or something of that nature;… Continue

Through The Eyes of A Firefighter

Through The Eyes of A Firefighter

Through these eyes I have seen the miracle of birth and also the tragedies of death.

Through these eyes I have seen the path of destuction that a fire leaves behind. And also the rebuilding of the damage it has caused.

Through these eyes I have seen the crumbled metal of a car accident and also the untouched body that sometimes comes walking out.

Through these…

10-24-07

Windy day here today. Started off with a broken power pole that landed on top of commercial building. Luckily no fire resulted from it. Got calls to two small grass fires that were close to buildings. Again got lucky as they were very small. Knock on wood...nothing since then..
