It's been a busy night here for Station 82 thanks to a cold front with high winds moving through the area. Not to mention two medical runs in the middle of it as well. Looks like no sleep for most of us tonight before work in the a.m.

My name is Mary Ellen. Those that know me fairly well call me Mel. The short story behind my nickname is that I used to cook professionally at one point in my life (among other occupations) and had a nasty habit of burning the bacon I was charged with cooking off on a weekly basis. As this was becoming an expensive habit, the chef in charge of the kitchen decided he needed to shorten my name; the thought process was that he had at least a shot at saving a couple of trays of porcine fatback…

(Ladies don't read this if u don't have a sense of humor)
This was written by a guy... it's pretty damn smart. and funny so just
go with it (Girls -- Have a sense of humor!)
One evening last week, my girlfriend and I were getting into bed.
Well, the passion starts to heat up, and she eventually says, 'I don't
feel like it, I just want you to hold me.'
I said, 'WHAT??!! What was that?!'
So she says the words that every boyfriend on the planet…

Okay, just a quick vent about something I've noticed.
We teach basic firefighter classes the importance of maintaining our tools and equipment. We teach them how important it is for everything to be in good working order.
Why is it, in that case, that there is not a decent sharp knife in any fire station kitchen that I've ever set foot in??? LOL Ever tried to cut an orange with a dull knife?

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
-I Corinthians
There are hundreds upon hundreds of charities out there competing for your time, attention, energy, and your cash. I know I get solicited by every imaginable cause out there; some I donate to, others I "back burner" because I'm committed elsewhere, some I just shake my head at ("Save the Donkeys in the Holy Land" is my newest source of fodder…

This was in my email this morning from a very good friend, and I thought there were too many truisms in this not to share with my friends on here.

I don't know if anybody else here has had any troubles with accessing your mail or your friends, but I have not been able to do so 17 out of 20 times(and thats a low estimate).I'm not ignoring anyone, I just don't have the icons in the upper left where they belong.Everytime I log on a little yellow triangle with an exclamation point appears in the lower left on my status bar with "Error on page" or "Done, but with errors on page!".I am logging in the right way but I am getting very frustrated…

Firefighternation, MySpace, Marines.TogetherWeServed.com, those are just some of the websites I frequent to connect with friends and acquaintances. I use MySpace for a variety of reasons but mostly as a way to connect with friends from long ago which I am no long near since I've moved to the east coast. MTWS.com is a site that allows me to keep up with the greatest achievement I could ever do. It allows me to reconnect with fellow Marines and virtually hang around the worlds finest and no one…

Got news in December 07 that I passed Firefighter 1. Now I am getting ready for my EMT class coming up this Feb 2008. I have been able to go on calls at the Volunteer station, which is exciting for a "rookie".

Well, where do I start?
Our state and counties are starting to feel the increased number of alarms due to the plain fact, Delaware is growing in population. The only thing that is not growing is Volunteer Firefighters? I still volunteer and very proud of that accomplishment, but my Career counterparts don't like it too much...But thats enough of that. I am writing this blog to uncover our misconceptions that we have developed within this state. We believe that because of our long…

During a recent Delaware incident, 7 firefighters became trapped on a 2nd floor duplex during a tough firefight. Fortunately, the firefighters were rescued by an agressive Rapid Intervention Team with just minutes to spare. Initial reports were that there was no life hazard, as occupants had been accounted for. But considering the time of day, 7:30am on a Saturday morning, Chief Chuck Hayes did what most chief officers would do -- order a… Continue

I know my Nickname looks kind of bad but I was actually given that name by a few people. The full name is the Adrenaline Junkie. My parents and a bunch of my colleagues gave me that nickname because I get so excited so fast about calls. Whether the calls are big or even small... when the tones drop my pulse sky rockets. I love the rush I get from this job... I always have even when my dad first got started and before I really officially got certified in anything!

Although I have been the Deputy Director of our state US&R task force and had chief's rank in different capacities before, today I donned the Christmas gift from my wife and children, a brand-new white N6A, marking my new career as a Chief Fire Officer. Last night, a bunch of us gathered at Reilly's, a little pub on the Island's north end, to talk about our future and celebrate our past. Jeff, who has been my friend and brother firefighter for over 24 years, was one of the groomsmen at…
