A Scranton firefighter and an elderly couple were killed in an Ash Street fire this morning.

Captain James Robeson was killed when a bucket truck he was in came into close proximity to high voltage power lines.

The couple's names have not been released.

At least three other firefighters were injured and were taken to a local hospital. Jennifer Hawker, Tom Owens, and Rich Czyzyk are undergoing treatment, but their conditions are not available at this time.

Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Operating aerial trucks and Ladders at the scene of emergencies calls for a lot of skill and training especially in an urban setting.

Overhead power lines are a constant threat. Even when they are spotted they can become dislodged for any number of reasons and fall onto unsuspecting Firefighters. I was assigned to a Tower Ladder for three years and we were always training with the bucket. Even so you can never be too careful when it comes to electricity. I'm not especially fond of electricity and would rather face a raging fire any day of the week. The primary reason is that electricity is invisible. You don't know you have made a mistake until it's too late. As firefighters we are trained in electrical hazards but still rely primarily on the Electric Company to resolve electrical problems and emergencies. Getting power shut down is usually one of our first priorities at an emergency scene.

I hope they find out what went wrong on this job. My heart goes out to the Scranton brothers and Captain Robeson's family as well as the family of the fire victims. God Bless.
