Clarification of Recognition of 9/11's Fallen Heroes at the National September Eleventh Memorial and Museum

In some of the developements for the National September Eleventh Museum and Memorial being built near Ground Zero, concerns arose that the fallen members would not be properly recognized, their department and rank not recognized. A little more than a year ago I personally met a representative of the committee for this Memorial. What I learned is there are so many details being addressed to make it a fitting memorial for all and a learning experience for future generations. With the recent… Continue

This year’s Fire-Rescue International (FRI), to be held August 25-29 in Dallas, will mark the fourth anniversary for the National Fire Fighter Near-Miss Reporting System, which has emerged as an essential source for case studies, training information, learning opportunities and firefighter safety information. The data collected as a part of this program is now being tapped in a variety of ways by… Continue

Extinguishing the Flames of Liability

An alarming number of firefighters across the country are being criminally charged, injured and killed while performing duties intended to protect the public. Fire service leaders have an obligation to firefighters to provide a safe working environment and to the public to limit liability that may be imposed on their department.

This August at FRI in Dallas, come hear fire service veterans Bill Tricarico and Dave Denniston at this… Continue

Training.

Hey everybody.

I was wanting to get some ideas on different training yall do in your stations. With the juniors, probies, and new recruits. What do you do for air pack training, radio communications, and stuff in that nature. Do you do scavenger hunts on trucks?

I would like some input, I am putting together a few things to do on monday night meetings with our guys. New and old, just to remind them where things are in the station, refresh them on air packs, and teach some… Continue

2009 LODD 6-Month Summary

"2009 LODD 6-Month Summary", Firefighter Behavior

The following is a brief look at the line of duty death numbers for the first half of the year. Future posts will take a narrow look at these fatalities, the difference between "on duty" and "line of duty", and without the inclusion of the December 2003 Hometown Heroes Survivors Benefits Act. This is to be a cultural and numerical evaluation… Continue

Mutual Dependence on Independence Day

Independence Day - July 4 - is a uniquely American holiday. Many of us treat it like just another summer holiday - a barbecue, swimming or boating, relaxing with friends, and concluding with an evening of fireworks. This year, I ask you to take a few minutes to do something a little different.

The American Revolution was the brain child… Continue

Breast Cancer Walk in one more week, donations needed HELP

Hi Everyone

Just thought I would take this last minute opportunity to ask for donations for my breast cancer walk which is in one more week.

Donations are way down of course this year. And even with heavy promotion, there is really no way that I can gather up the needed participant commitment.

http://www.inhonorof.info

However, that does not stop me from the last minute push to ask for help. I am asking all of my internet connections to donate at least $1. each. And in… Continue

Rapid Intervention Team Book

We are in the process of updating our popular Rapid Intervention Teams book published by Fire Protection Publications of Oklahoma State University. It was first published in 2001, and we are working on the 2nd edition. If you have photos, comments or techniques for Rapid Intervention that you feel would be useful to share in the book, send them to me and if we use them, we will be sure to give you credit. Good stuff will likely result in a free copy of the book to the submitter.

I applaud Boston FD's members

I, like most of us here, received an email from the secret list (www.secretlist.com). It was discussing the brown-out situation in Boston. The following is a portion of the e-mail I received -

But it's a whole lot different now in Boston, MA.

Not surprisingly, defiant off-duty BFD Firefighters are intentionally disobeying BFD orders and voluntarily staffing 3 Boston fire companies that were closed this week as part of a new "brown out" policy aimed at reducing overtime… Continue

It is ALWAYS Political

A COMMON WHINE FROM FIRE OFFICER CANDIDATES IS THAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE NOT POLITICIANS. A "real" firefighter is good of heart, focused on saving those endangered by fire and righteous in suppression skills. That is all that is needed.

Only in the movies ...
