Hey everybody.

I was wanting to get some ideas on different training yall do in your stations. With the juniors, probies, and new recruits. What do you do for air pack training, radio communications, and stuff in that nature. Do you do scavenger hunts on trucks?

I would like some input, I am putting together a few things to do on monday night meetings with our guys. New and old, just to remind them where things are in the station, refresh them on air packs, and teach some how to talk on the radio the correct way.

Any ideas would be GREAT!

thanks.

Thank y'all so much for the ideas.

We did try something at my station and it was fun and everybody learned something new!

We made a slide show of possible fire calls or past fire calls.
And then we put four chairs back to back like riding to a call. And you have somebody be the dispatcher and give the initial page like normal.and then the person riding captain gives the size up.

And the two in the back have to pretty much invision what they just rolled up on.

And them have fun doing it because we actually used radios on our private channel. And some ofbis have pager tones on our phones and sirens so we made it an actual real life seniaro.

=) happy practicing!
And stay safe.
Remember you can never practice too much

For SCBA we have hall recorders for the best time from start to being on air, for every missed step it usually a ten second penalty. At the end of the year the best time is awarded at the Christmas party. I have fond that this works good, if a firefighter can be fast in the hall they should have no problem with getting it on at the fire. Vary good trend by the way, I like some of the ides here so far.

One thing we do....we call it scba confidence game. we take an airpack and mess it up. seperate the reg, low pressure line, straps, take the bottle out, and disconnect the mask (we have scotts). Make them go into a dark room (maintenance room) with full ppe minus airpack. They have to do a search, find the equipment, and put it back together and come out breathing air. We time each other. Makes for a friendly competition and gets the guys/girls very familiar with the SCBA. If you have RIT Pack You can do the same. Send them in with one piece missing and they have to utilize the rit pack. Just an idea

Set up SCBA training at the city park. Run a rope around and through the playground equipment. Obscure the mask and turn em loose in teams of 3. This is fun, and good training. Or try using hunting talk-about radios for training. This is an easy way to train new hires. No radio traffic is heard across the scanners. Have them use common terminology and go check or count the fire hydrants in a location of town. This will get them out and away for you to be an improvised IC at the station. Make them be on their own, so no help is around to tell them what to say. Then simply score their action and go over it with them on what they did great and what needs improving.

oh no I dont need to ask the guys at the station. Because they listen to me. =)
I want stuff to do with them. HAHA! I've been through my training. So me my mom and dad. ( LT and Chief. ) are trying to come up with some fun ways to train so they dont get burned out. =)

But thanks for your tip. That should be fun. We have used people but I think a ball or something small would make it more realistic for a child.

for air pack training we have done search and rescue with either another ff as the victim or even another object like a ball this makes searching even more thorough. remember use your imagination if you are still having trouble coming up with new ideas don't feel bad by getting ideas from the guys at the firehouse.
