You Know Your A Firefighter If......

1. You can tell what type of fire it is by the smell of smoke 10 miles away.

2. You lay out your clothes from that day so if there is a call at night you can find them quickly.

3. You have ever been airborne without an aircraft and water was your thrust.

4. You carry a ton of…

Paint a Picture with Words

Vehicle #1

First big snow of the season shows the rust we all have in our winter driving skills. Safety is only secondary in this installment. What do I want to know enroute to a vehicle accident? What is the most useless fact that I have to sift through trying to mentally prepare for my arrival? The dispatch information is a given in this discussion. Good or bad you have what you have. Obviously unknown vehicles, unknown…

My first working fire with sta 279

Well I got my first working fire as a probie on sat. It was the end unit of a series row houses. As I was going to the station I got to the back side of my block and there it was. At this point the tones finish dropping and the address comes over. I pass the location and pd is just arriving on scene about halfway there, pd reports a working fire, and my first out engine is already out the door with 5. I arrive at the station at the same time our second Captain arrived. He decides to jump the… Continue

Looking for photos

Hello everyone, I am in the middle of writing a training manual on fire service hydraulics, and I am looking for photos of a engine pulling a draft from a pond or portable tank. Thanks William

Do you remember.....

Rubber turn out coats....

Tin Helmets (Cairns Senator)....

Thigh high rubber boots.....

Riding the "back step"....

Riding the back step to an alarm without any gear on....

Folding the turn out coats over the side rails of the engine and then buckle them so they wouldn't fly off....

Placing your size boots in just the right place so you wouldn't get stuck with a size 13 or worse a size 6....

The red…

I wish you knew

What I wish people knew about EMS, Firefighters, Dispatchers and Law Enforcement.
I wish you could know what it is like to search a burning bedroom for trapped children at 3am, flames roling above your head, your palms and knees burning as you crawl, the floor sagging under your weight as the kitchen below you burns.…

miranda rights for EMS

You have the right to be spinal immobilized despite the fact that you were only hit at a speed equivalent to that of a sloth on valium

If you give up this right to abuse the system, any attempt to fake neck pain later on can and will be used against you in the course of me starting multiple, painful, large-bore IVs

You have the right to distract the ER physician from treating any real patients and have an attorney present, which is why…

EMT Prayer for the Fallen of 9/11

Lord, Grant me the wisdom so that I may treat those of your children that lay at my feet. Let my hands be gentle, sure and swift to impart to them your sacred gift. Let me see only a patient's need not their color, race or creed. Help me to always be my best even when it's on my hours rest. Grant me the insight to understand why patients of mine are going to die. Let me remember that when they do there is a wondeful life in Heaven with you. Lord, if in the time of duty I should fall help my… Continue

THE FIREMAN'S PRAYER

A Fireman's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God

Wherever Flames may rage

Give me the strength to save some life

Whatever be its age

Help me embrace a little child

Before it is too late

Or save an older person from

The horror of that fate

Enable me to…

What Firefighter's Are

Firefighters

There are many people that dont appreciate the job that a fireman does. Here's the bulliten.

When the fire trucks are delayed 40 seconds in traffic, People say:

"It took them 20 minutes to get here."

When the truck races at 40 m.p.h., it's:

"Look at those reckless fools."

When four men struggle with an eight-man ladder:

"They don't even know how to raise a ladder."

When firemen open windows for ventilation to reduce heat in… Continue

Let me introduce myself

Hello everyone!

This being my first "blog" here, let me introduce myself to you all. I am 35, a call firefighter paramedic for a small community fire department (ok, I list this one first because I've been there forever), I work full time as a paramedic for a small, yet relatively busy service, and for another EMS only and fire department as a paramedic. I am the proud dad of 3 kids 16, 11 and 8 and I have been married to my wonderful wife for the past 12…

Finally, Some Peace and Quiet

Well, after several weeks of testing and being assessed and held under a magnifying glass, I await the results of our Battalion Chief's promotional list, which will identify who our next two BCs will be, as two of ours retire after the first of the year.

I have been a Captain in our department for 18 years, having not taken the option to do some other things because I loved the job so much. I mean, how many guys you know get to run around with dedicated "steely eyed killers" from…
