Dallas firefighter killed in crash

A Dallas-Fire Rescue paramedic was killed early Saturday in a two-car accident in Oak Cliff, officials said.
The vehicles collided around 1 a.m. at Cockrell Hill Road and Illinois Avenue, Dallas Fire-Rescue Lt. Joel Lavender said. Julio Alvarado Jr., 32, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the Chevrolet ran a red light and collided with Mr. Alvarado's Honda. Witnesses said a Chevrolet sedan, driven by a man, was traveling west on Illinois Avenue when it ran a red light at Cockrell Hill and collided with Mr. Alvarado's Honda Accord. Mr. Alvarado was thrown from the car, which was torn in half by the impact.
A woman who was a passenger in the Chevrolet suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital, Lt. Lavender said. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured. Their identities were not immediately available.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken into custody by Dallas police. No information on any charges was available.
