A (GOLD) SHIFT TOMORROW

Tomorrow is a return to duty on RED shift after a 1+1. The guys

are all pretty psyched about the holidays, so the next few shifts will

be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to getting back to

work. It's always important to maintain a positive focus on why

we do this job. Always remember it is the best job in the world

and when heading off to the firehouse in the morning, say to yourself,

"Today I get to be a firefighter" rather than, "I have to go to work

now."… Continue

Florida firefighters- here is the Save Our Services website

Anyone who lives in Florida knows that the tax reform referendum is coming up on January 29th. Anyone in emergency services or public education also knows that what is being proposed is not going to help home owners and will endanger jobs.

I've been reading the local news publications and the comments posted on their websites are alarming. Many ignorant individuals believe that Florida's tax problems are due mostly to the wages that firefighters are being paid. Some go so far as to… Continue

The amazing, the great, the fantastic, the super cool, ME

Ok, so some people here want to know a little more about me. Why they would want to, I have no idea. I mean yes, I know that I have classic good looks, intelligence and am witty. Some have even gone so far as to say titan among men. But I am also a simple man. I don’t deserve much…perhaps a statue that can be seen from space…but that’s all. I’m not greedy.…

EXPLOSION POTENTIAL

Had a very intersting call, yesterday. A vacant house's natural

gas line was piped to the detached garage to supply a heater. The

heater had been stolen, leaving the gas pipe spewing natural gas into

the empty and sealed up garage. The LEL was 27% upon opening the

man door - the walls and buiding were saturated with highly explosive

natural gas.

Everything turned out OK. We shut down the gas and ventillated the garage.

Just imagine if the FIRE DEPT… Continue

Watch Out For Those "Icy" Roads

This past Sunday, we received a call for a single vehicle motor vehicle accident. It was about 2000 hours and about 40-45 degrees outside. The call wasn't far from my house, so I responded POV. As I approached the scene there was a Tahoe on its side, partially blocking one lane of travel. I pulled beyond the accident into a curve to alert oncoming traffic of the accident. As I walked back to the Tahoe, I was met by the driver who told me to be careful. "What do you mean?" I asked him. "Be…

u know u r a firefighter when...........

You know you are a firefighter when:

1. You can tell what type of fire it is by the smell of smoke 10 miles away.

2. You have ever had a heated debate over the color of fire trucks.

3. You have ever spent 10 min trying to force open a door only to have someone come along and open it by turning the handle.

4. You have ever taken 10 or more showers in 1 day.

5. You have ever been airborne without an aircraft…

u mgiht be a volunteer

You might be a volunteer if:

You've woken up thinking your pager went off and as you look at it..., it does.

You lay out your clothes from that day so if there is a call at night you can find them quickly.

You carry enough in your car to extinguish a minor blaze.

You spend a great deal of time explaining to your friends what it means to be a volunteer- "Yes, I'm ALWAYS on duty. No, I'm not kidding!"

You…

SEMI TRAILER ROLLOVER

Had an interesting call today. A semi trailer was being towed by a moving company - not pulled by a tractor - but pulled by a "tow truck" rolled over into a utility pole. The rig was being pulled around the turn of an intersection (E/B to N/B) and the inertia toppled the trailer. No one got hurt. The box came off it's chassis. COMED had to cut the power to the power lines so that we could move 3 vehicles with the power line draping over them. They crained the trailer back onto it's chasis,… Continue

ipods..ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!

I was scrolling through some of the discussions and came across a thread of a guy asking for playlist advice for a CD to listen to en route to an incident. I'll hit on that in another blog, but for right now i think this is much more important. A girl posted a comment in there about how she likes to listen to an ipod while she is on scene and that she can easily wear it with her gear, but feels that it doesn't effect her hearing on scene. i posted a reply to that but i feel it is an…

Coins

I was sitting in class today thinking of things that have been going on in my life, the good, bad, and the rest. There were parts of me that thought that life was good. Another felt mixed. I guess to describe myself now would be like a coin.

You start off life shiny and new. As time goes on…

News feed blog, brand new

Hey all fellow firemen and women, I am new to this site and infact have only heard of it recently. Normally my internet time is not spent looking at Fire Department stuff, but me and a coworker just started a newsfeed blog on blogger. Go Here Firefighteraction

It is very new, but I hope to get some interest. I update it as often as I can with nationwide news stories or press that relates to the fire service

Holidays!

The holidays can be a fun time and a depressing time. I have faced both in my lifetime as I am sure many of you have too. I wanted to take this time to say,

Merry Christmas!

What's for Dinner tonight??????

Well, here is the first of many blogs about one on my favorite topics, food of course. Nothing is more of a tradition than sitting down for dinner at the house, even if you only get 20 min between runs. I love to cook and all the brothers (and the sis) get stuck with my hair brained ideas for dinner, and yes I get the “what is that?”, Really?”, and my favorite “I brought my own.” But, they end up trying it and liking it so, don’t worry you’re not my little test monkeys (sry if I struck a…

Trail of the Firewriter

Fellow Firefighter Tom Hart invited me to this great website. The purpose of my life has been to promote the Fire Service. I have written a book about my life as a Firefighter. Take a peek at my website www.rjhaig.com . I believe my book will help give others an insight into what we do and the sacrifices we make as Firefighters. I know I am going to enjoy being a part of FirefighterNation. Good to be back with my brother and sister Firefighters.

Already?

So, I just passed my rider's test for 2 of our engines, and I'm already getting the "you're at the station more than you're home" and "I think you care about the station more than you do us". Just wondering if any of you guys have encountered this....and some advice? Yeah, I am down at the station alot. I like it. I think I've found what I'm supposed to do....and I want to be at the station as much as I can....but I don't want to push people away.
