Had a very intersting call, yesterday. A vacant house's natural gas line was piped to the detached garage to supply a heater. The heater had been stolen, leaving the gas pipe spewing natural gas into the empty and sealed up garage. The LEL was 27% upon opening the man door - the walls and buiding were saturated with highly explosive natural gas.

Everything turned out OK. We shut down the gas and ventillated the garage.

Just imagine if the FIRE DEPT hadn't been called and a heat source set off an explosion. You never know what you'll pull up to, so be sure to ALWAYS keep safety in mind for yourself and YOUR CREW.

Danger lurks everywhere as a FIREFIGHTER.

Stay safe out there!

Had a similar call a few years back. We responded to a reported propane leak in a residence. Engine arrived and could smell propane from the street. Residence was a moblehome with an addition that sat a good distance off the road. In full gear with SCBA we carefully turned off the tanks and opened the doors to ventilate. Turns out the guy was going through a nasty divorce. The wife and her father emptyed out the house and took everything including the propane clothes dryer. They just snapped the line off the back of the dryer and left. The house had two 100# propane tanks that filled the house. Luckily this was in the summer, as you said all it would have taken is the furnace to kick on or some little spark to sent it off.
