Training Blog #1 - Introduction

First, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Christopher Smith, I am 31 years old, I have never been married, and I do not have any children. I was born and raised in Randolph County, a relatively low-populated county in northeast Arkansas. After graduating from Maynard High School (as valedictorian, I might add, haha) in 1994, I went to Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR, for one year as a music education major. Because I really wasn't sure that it was the path for me, and…

STARFISH

There was this man, walking down the beach and in the distance he saw a figure dancing....as he got closer he saw it was a child, bending down and reaching and throwing - and as he got even closer he saw that the beach was covered with Starfish. The waves were coming in and some were getting caught up and were being sent back to the sea and so many more were just lying on the beach. And this child was running and scooping up starfish and throwing them back into the sea. When he… Continue

ONE ROSE

I would rather have one little rose From the garden of a friend Than to have the choicest flowers When my stay on earth must end. I would rather have one plesant word In kindness said to me Than flattery when my heart is still And life has ceased to be. I would rather have a loving smile From friends I know are true Then tears shed round my casket When this world I've bid adieu. Bring me all your flowers today Whether pink, or white, or red; I'd rather have one blossom now…

Nervous

I am so nervous right now, I think I am gonna be sick. I have a couple of days to go until I have surgery. The patholigist report from this surgery will determine my fire career. It has taken me this long to get up the nerve to go back into it again and now I am faced with the possibility of chemo/radiation which obviously puts me out for good. It sucks bad enough that I had to back out of my upcoming classes just because I won't be recovered in enough time. I gotta go work on my car or… Continue

FDNY Lt Killed in line of duty

A Lieutenant from Engine Company 249 in Brooklyn was killed in the Line of Duty this evening. Initial reports are that companies were operating at a hi-rise fire and had wind driven fire and heavy smoke conditions. Please lets say a prayer for our fellow brother and may he rest in peace. To all other firefighters play safe and be careful.

Below is a link to the Firehouse.com article on this LODD.…

1st Alarm

Thanks to Chris Simpson for refreshing my memory.

In 1984 I was a 17 year old Junior firefighter in Aledo, Texas. Now in the '80's we still went in as juniors. Things have changed and today Aledo has Paid guys from 7am- 7pm and vollies fill out the service. But back in the day, it was all volunteer and not that many of us in a small town of about 800.

So on a winter day in early 84 I was a teachers aid in the Kindergarten building. Out of the cold a teacher came in…

Whew! Passed it!

Wonder of wonders! I finally stopped putting it off and took my written test to ride out of class as an acting lieutenant. Oh, guess you might want to know how I did.....

LOL. I passed with the highest grade so far! Would have had a perfect score if I hadn't gone back and changed a few answers. But, 90% works for me. I really need to get over my persistent fear of failing. That night, I ended up floating out to one of the other stations and I had to ride up. Nothing…

Heated Pump Compartments?

01/03/2007 - We were paged to a car fire today. I took the role of IC. The fire in question was actually in another jurisdiction, but since they didn't answer the page we got paged. By the time we got there the car was a total loss. It took a little longer than usual because of the below freezing temperatures. I opted to have Engine 5 respond because it has a heated pump compartment. E5 is a huge truck with a top safe speed of 65 mph (see my pix). The fire was over 15 open highway miles…

I can almost feel/smell the bunkers now!

Well, I made the cut! I was voted onto the Rehoboth Beach Fire Department last night, and will be getting fitted in my gear Monday. I am excited to get back to it after what felt like a long break. Still no word on what certificates they will accept yet, but I still have my fingers crossed! I will find out on Monday what they will take and what I have to retake. Thanks for all the support thus far! Hope everyone is doing well out there in the new year! :o)

Something For Everyone To Check out

Go to www.firemensmemorial.org

My husband and I have gone to this for five years now and we love it. You get to meet people from all over and my husband loves the fact that they have new apparatus on the spot. They have a huge flea market all for fireman, and they carry somethings for those who are not a fireman. We take our family every year and have an awesome time. If you want something to do in the month of September this is the place…

Welcome 2008!

Well the new year is upon us, hope it brings lots of exciting things. Spent New Years Eve in the arms of my Baby so how could it go wrong! Worked a 24 hour shift New Years Day. We were very busy with all the normal calls, chest pain, pain all over and of course multiple psych pts. It was all in all a good day. Nobody died in my truck and that is always a good thing. Started off with a new partner as well. Looks like it will be a very busy year as usual, but not gonna let anything get me down.… Continue

Blog of Caution

I am writing this to make you all aware of a potentially serious health problem that can take you by surprise.

Six weeks ago today I was diagnosed with acute angle closure glaucoma. Glaucoma is defined as a buildup of pressure inside the eyeball. The aqueous humor, which is the replaceable liquid inside the eye, cannot drain properly thus…
