I forgot to tell you about Sunday. I had a GREAT time at an exempt picnic at one of our firehouses.

In our township, you are exempt if you are with the fire department for seven years. I am not exempt, but the picnic is opened up to all the firefighters in the township.

Last year I attended the same picnic but this year I knew more people, and I knew some people a little better than I did last year. I even caught… Continue

I have wanted to write a post for weeks, but don't know what to say. I'd like to say something witty, like I'm going to the beach each weekend, or I'm sitting by a pool with a beer in my hand, but I cannot tell a lie.

While the rest of the world seems to be enjoying a great summer, or in NJ at least, I am struggling with real life issues that would have crushed another person. Yes, crushed. The fact that I know I can reach… Continue

Last night we had our part 2 of a Decon drill. It was way interesting.

While working I stumbled upon this interesting press release and new guide on combustible dusts from OSHA:

Hola from New Jersey!

Did you ever sit with a group of people that were totally knowledgeable about so many topics and wonder how they got there? It seems whenever I am at the firehouse, I get all the answers.

What do I do about the green spots on my house? What do I do about my sump pump not making any noise? How can I make my daughter understand that a 450 degree flat iron on a wood floor can start a fire? How… Continue

Be prepared for heat emergencies

with temperatures topping 90-95% in Indiana I have noticed that the run volume has increased dramatically for heat related emergencies. As firefighters we need to take extra precautions during extremely hot days so that we don't become a victem ourselves.

Take some preventative measures and make sure that you stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

On scene make sure you check the tough guy attitude and visit rehab frequently. I've seen many guys… Continue

Well, I am happy to report I got a 76 on the Fire Officer test. I didn't take the course but just researched a bit. And that gets me a free ice cream from my friend Jim Q.

Funny thing is I got a better grade than when I took FF1

Go figure!

I can't tell you how much better I feel knowing I can freely blog here.

Today was quiet, went to Mass, saw some of our firefighters as ushers. What a great thing for the community to see! And one of my favorite guys got a bench dedicated to him at our local park. Wish I could have seen it, but was working.

Talk to you all tomorrow!

And the answer was LAW to my question.

I will let you guys… Continue

I can't tell you how I feel when I turn on my laptop in the morning and see a friend's request, or someone sent me a message, through firefighternation.com.

Today is Saturday and I was supposed to back to where I used to live on Eastern Long Island to visit some old friends. Important since I don't have any local friends who I can go to the mall with, or take a walk with, etc. You know - the kind of friends you've had since… Continue

Boy they say that time goes fast, and that is all too true.

I have been scrambling to keep up with my new job, letting go of real estate without the whole world knowing, especially my old clients, and dealing with two children that have totally different mental issues. Time will tell on the third child, but I am hoping by the time he is older I will have a wealth of information that I can pull from.

Unfortunately… Continue

A Spartan Attitude for Firefighters

I recently watched the movie “300” and find it to be inspiring and historically interesting. I have seen it maybe three or four times and this most recent viewing it made me stop and think. These Spartans were a proud, honorable and highly trained group of men and society. It was an honor to die protecting Sparta.

Sound familiar? The fire service should be a place that we are proud, honorable and in trying to save a life, we are revered for giving our lives to save another. At least that… Continue

research paper

I am writing my research paper for english on should it be nessecary for a career firefighter to have basic EMT training. I was going to try to get some input from true career firefighters. I personally believe that there should be at least 3-4 on each shift who are trained in emt but not all should be required to. what do you think? anything posted could help.

Yesterday I finally took some time to myself. Got my hair done, walked around Morristown Green talking to strangers as usual, and showed some houses in Morris Twp. I am so thankful that my life has turned around. If any of you are reading this that have problems with your kids, or your career path, have faith. If I could do, so could you.

Have a nice day everyone. It's sunny and warm here in New Jersey.

Thank you… Continue

Today was clean up day for our company at LaRue Field in Morris Township. The field was dedicated in 1971, and about ten of us gathered with rakes and bags this morning to clean up the field for the little leaguers. I was glad to do such a service.

Today our fire department had a drill on rescue harnesses. See how someone can be lowered from a second story window was very interesting, especially how the safety person below could control how slow or fast the person was lowered. Although I didn't climb out of the window, I took the practical for me approach as being the backup person on the rope. I also saw equipment I never saw before. They were Figure 8 hooks.

I think this was the first time in my life I didn't reflect on the fact that today was Good Friday. I've been working so hard at my new part-time job, which I LOVE, writing webcontent for lawyers. Everything else is privileged so I cannot say more. I am, of course, still a realtor and tomorrow morning will be boxing up a tiny house for someone who died.

It's been pretty quiet around the firehouse. Last week was a our pancake… Continue

"We Run Red Lights For A Living" - AOL Story From Boston -2009.04.09

'We Run Red Lights For a Living'

Inside A Fire Engine Driver's Mind by Craig Howie | AOL Autos Posted: 09 April 2009

Not many young drivers make the jump from riding a motorcycle around town to weaving a 15-ton red behemoth through traffic with lights flashing and sirens blaring, but when Boston Fire Captain and driver trainer Scott Wahlen joined the service 13 years ago, he didn't even have his own driver's license. Now he… Continue
