Notes from a Rookie Firefighter...April 13, 2009

Today our fire department had a drill on rescue harnesses. See how someone can be lowered from a second story window was very interesting, especially how the safety person below could control how slow or fast the person was lowered. Although I didn't climb out of the window, I took the practical for me approach as being the backup person on the rope. I also saw equipment I never saw before. They were Figure 8 hooks.

Training is always a good thing, even for us old heads, Things change so we need to stay up on those changes, not only for the service we provide but the safety of us & our co workers. I am a carrer firefighter of 21 years with some law enforcment mixed in & Special rescue (FEMA Task Force) as well as Haz-Mat & Emergency Managment / WMD. I have found that we veterens can benifit from traing as we should be initiating the training for the rookies as well as teaching all we know to them, this always brings things to the forefront that we have forgotten.. Keep training & stay safe!

Rescue training can be a lot of fun and quite interesting as well....all our interior guys did Firefighter survival training and it was quite interesting coming down a ladder head first....Never in my best days did I think I would ever do something like that but.....I did....LOL Paul

That's cool. I haven't had a drill as far as high angle rescue but I have had the chance to rappel 5 stories. That was pretty awesome. I just wish I could have done it from a higher building. Im into that high heights stuff.

NICE! Rescue drills are always the most fun for me! Does your department afford you the opportunity to jump into airbags?
