Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

For those of you that have kept up with my column, many of you know about the anxiety I've felt trying to manage going to the Fire Academy full-time with the antics of my teenagers, the horrible real estate market, and trying to do it all like many business women my age.

Today I did something I was really nervous about. It may seem soooo simple to some, but today I rode a motorcycle. Just like flying, I was nervous about this. Being uncoordinated, and hating rides and motion, I was afraid… Continue

A few Pittsburgh Fire Bureau photographs I took

Here are some decent pictures I took while recently in Pittsburgh that are more firefighter related.

Pittsburgh's iconic black and gold theme even resonates down to their fire plugs.

Pittsburgh Fire Bureau's 24 House, at S 18th St and Mary St in the city's famous South Side neighborhood, with downtown buildings Mellon Bank and USX Tower in the background.

Brass Hydrant Parts Proving To Be Lucrative For Thieves

Start taking a closer look at your hydrants in your area folks! The downturn in the economy has brought about a new target for those turning metal into cash.

The brass top operating nuts of hydrants can net a tidy sum of money for thieves and it's happening in Northern Virginia. Without the operating nut, the hydrants are rendered inoperable (depending on the hydrant model).

Add this to your list of things you should do while performing district familiarization.… Continue

The Kentland Volunteer Fire Department shown in the video operates under the Prince Georges County Fire Department in Maryland .

WHOA! Morning Apparatus Check Interrupted By Oak Tree

Think about this one: You are minding your own business on a beautiful Sunday morning checking out the apparatus. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and the rookies are doing, well, what rookies do. Then all of a sudden CRASH! An oak tree falls in front of your station directly into the apparatus! That'll wake your ass up.

That's exactly what happened in Hillsborough County, Florida yesterday. An oak tree fell on Engine and… Continue

A Badged S.F. Firefighter Goes Topless In Gay Pride Parade

What are your thoughts about this? If you are a paid firefighter for a city, county or otherwise AND you wear your official badge on your bustier while topless in a parade - should you be disciplined? (For the record, it really doesn't matter what the parade is - the point is about being topless in public while displaying your employers official badge).

We hear out in San Fancisco that an off-duty firefighter was… Continue

Paramedic Charged With Sexual Battery In Back Of Ambulance

Down in Clearwater Florida, we are getting reports that a Pinellas County paramedic molested a patient in the back of the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Stop bleeding

I am taking a survey on hemostatic agents. These are "blood stoppers" used in the military environment and is becoming widely prevalent in the SWAT community. I would like as many people to respond as possible about whether or not they carry or have heard of various hemostatic products. So far this is a list that I have compiled and I have much more information on application.

Notes from a Rookie Firefighter

Last night I cooked dinner for our firehouse and Morristown NJ softball game. Our company won the game, but that's not really what the event was about. It was about participation on a team, and working together for a common goal which is what the fire department is all about.

While I was setting up for the game, I was with the old timers, whom I spend every afternoon with at Station 4. No matter what problem you have, or question you have, the old timers have a good and sometimes… Continue

Wilderness Medicine

We are going to be in the beautiful town of Helen Georgia. For those of you who are not familiar with Helen, it is an old style German town. It has lazy river flowing ice cold water though the center of town which will be awesome during those hot days of summer. You can splash around on innertubes for hours. The Wilderness Medicine EMT upgrade course is for medical professionals and will be starting on August 18-22, 2008. Course Cost will be $600 and upon successful completion you will receive… Continue

Under Fire

Under fire...we were there within minutes of the dispatched. Lightning had hit a house and started a fire in the attic. We got there in full turnout and grabbed the preconnect for a fast attack. The visibility in the house was crystal clear and very quiet. You can feel your heart beat. Its pounding from the adrenalin. We head up the flight of stairs and can hear it over us. The fire. We pull the ceiling with the pike poles and can see a sliver of an amber glow. It grows brighter the harder we… Continue

What would you say that you learned to somebody 300 years from now?

Maybe I'm just a geek. There was a question that somebody asked me and I thought that it was very thought provoking. I would like to hear from everybody and what they think. The question. What would you say is your legacy to someone 300 years from now?

I have to put that where?

For any of us that serve on volunteer or rapid deployment units storage of gear can be a real issue. You need to have all of your gear available but you can't look like Paris Hilton with a separate butler to carry all our bags. I'm always on the look out for any tips or pointers that can assist with packing equipment. I recently saw an article on packing for a trip. But, though that it also could apply to gear. I have reprinted the article below. Pleas post any ideas you have or tips you have… Continue

Tactical Medic training

I talk to alot of fire/EMS folks who are always asking on recommendations for a tactical medic school and of course my natural response is Tangent Edge. With all bias being put aside, there are many tactical medic schools besides Tangent Edge that are quite remarkable. CONTOMS was developed many years ago and was one of the original Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) programs headed by members of Special Forces. CONTOMS is currently NOT up and running due to funding. I expect they'll be up… Continue
