For those of you that have kept up with my column, many of you know about the anxiety I've felt trying to manage going to the Fire Academy full-time with the antics of my teenagers, the horrible real estate market, and trying to do it all like many business women my age.
Today I did something I was really nervous about. It may seem soooo simple to some, but today I rode a motorcycle. Just like flying, I was nervous about this. Being uncoordinated, and hating rides and motion, I was afraid I would fall, or the bike would tip over, etc. Riding a motorcycle was one of my goals turning 47 and I was one month past my goal.
But you know what? I did it...I held onto the driver for dear life, and was one with the bike so to speak. We zipped through Chatham, passing the Chatham Volunteer Fire Department and rode some back roads for a half hour.
The first thing I did on my way back was stop at the firehouse and tell some of the guys.
After that, I headed to a local democratic fundraiser where one of the volunteer firefighters is campaigning. He said something to me that is so true. When you feel anxious about something, DON'T. It's never as bad as you think it's going to be. Note to self, don't be anxious about the drills at the Academy. The kids being half my age, this ain't high school anymore and I'm not competing with them. I just wish I could stop competing with myself.
